When did the cassowary move to the Australian Center? The old exhibit was probably the worst thing in the whole zoo so that is very nice to hear.Only the cassowary is still kept on exhibit in the Australian Center.

That's a shame, I have bad luck with Aardvarks, never got to see the one at Houston and as I understand it Black Lemurs are on their way out in regards to the AZA population. Thanks though Hopefully I can find the cassowary, last time at the Australia area I only saw the Wombat, singing dog, and kunkune pigsOnly the cassowary is still kept on exhibit in the Australian Center.
Singing Dog is now gone (supposedly returning though) and Kunekune pigs are in the children's section. But there's a Koala and Matschies Tree Kangaroo in the indoor building. Did you miss those? That's a shame, I have bad luck with Aardvarks, never got to see the one at Houston and as I understand it Black Lemurs are on their way out in regards to the AZA population. Sorry for the confusion I was referring to just the outdoor habitats, I did see both the Koala and Matschie's Tree Kangaroo!Singing Dog is now gone (supposedly returning though) and Kunekune pigs are in the children's section. I knew it was going to come at some point but hoping not too soon. This has hit me like a punch to the gut and ruined my Thanksgiving. I've been visiting him since 2008 and it was always a pleasure to see him. I hope his keepers and the Zoo Miami community will be ok handling his loss. I visited the zoo in March fearing that it could be my last chance to see him and am so glad I did!!! I hope that Nellie and Ongard will be ok.As first reported by @Corangurilla and @ZCChip in the “North American Asian Elephant Population” thread. “Dalip”, believed to be the oldest Asian elephant bull in the country, had unfortunately passed away this Thursday afternoon; following a series of health problems which had lead his overall health to decline for the worst. Being one of the zoo’s most iconic animals, I am certain that hearing about this bit of news would be very disappointing for everyone; especially to those who have known/seen him best.
They're Common Warthogs (spp sundevallii). P. africanus used to be considered a subspecies of P. aethiopicus, so the signage is just using outdated taxonomy.something interesting is that their Warthogs are signed as (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) which is the desert warthog, I thought all warthogs in the states were common warthogs(P. africanus).
I see, thank you! They're Common Warthogs (spp sundevallii). P. africanus used to be considered a subspecies of P. aethiopicus, so the signage is just using outdated taxonomy.
Wow! I'm glad I was able to get some footage of them running around during my March visit. Hopefully Gaur can take their place. It'd be the perfect spot right next to the Indian Rhino and Banteng exhibits. Perhaps they can transfer the female over and get a new bull from the Bronx Zoo to restart their breeding program and expand the Gaur SSP.Got back from the zoo today, a few updates, the Somali Wild Ass are completely gone it seems, sign is gone and it says to expect a new species soon, there was a Baja Blue Rock Lizard in a enclosure that was labeled for Black-Tailed Montane Pit Viper so maybe the snake will be moving soon. and most excitingly during the Kiwi tour I was told they have plans to build a public habitat for their male Kiwi soon, it was supposed to happen 2 years ago but was delayed due to Covid.
There isn't a gaur SSP anymore. And with the new sustainability guidelines implemented by AZA, it takes much more than 2 zoos to start one. Not to say that they're not "allowed" to have and breed gaur anymore - just trying to temper expectations.Wow! I'm glad I was able to get some footage of them running around during my March visit. What hoofstock do you think will go there? Persian Onagers... Barasinghas? Something Asian or Southeast Asian right? There isn't a gaur SSP anymore.
