Zoo Miami Zoo Miami News 2022

Only the cassowary is still kept on exhibit in the Australian Center.
That's a shame, I have bad luck with Aardvarks, never got to see the one at Houston and as I understand it Black Lemurs are on their way out in regards to the AZA population. Thanks though Hopefully I can find the cassowary, last time at the Australia area I only saw the Wombat, singing dog, and kunkune pigs

Singing Dog is now gone (supposedly returning though) and Kunekune pigs are in the children's section. But there's a Koala and Matschies Tree Kangaroo in the indoor building. Did you miss those?

Sorry for the confusion I was referring to just the outdoor habitats, I did see both the Koala and Matschie's Tree Kangaroo!

Got my zoo membership and have some more visit updates.

Amazon & Beyond
1. New unsigned bird in the walkthrough aviary, I believe its a Green Heron.

2. There is a new lizard in the former Cuban Racer enclosure within the reptile house. Probably some sort of Sceloporus species.

3. The snakes in the reptile house are more or less back on exhibit, no more fungus infection signs.

4. Another "coming soon" sign in the aquarium/saki building - for a Jamaican Boa. Both it and Axolotl should be arriving soon.

Wings Of Asia
1. Construction from last visit is done and the aviary is reopened, except for the path by the Great Hornbill (closed for a very long time).

2. Javan Pond Herons are back on exhibit since summer. Currently around 20 left, but only saw one.

3. Got an updated species list, mostly same as last one I posted here before. Javan Pond Heron is added back and Baer's Pochard removed, but there is at least one left there.

Africa
1. New species added, Black Crowned Cranes. Unsigned in the Okapi/Duiker enclosure along with the also unsigned Sulcata Tortoise.

2. A couple of Nyalas are back on exhibit. Unfortunately, the signage for the Bay Duiker that shares their habitat has been removed. They haven't been on-display since forever because they don't do well in public. I'm not sure if they died, were sent to different zoo or are still bts with no chance of display in the foreseeable future.

Children's Zoo
1. They reopened. Only briefly entered to see the Meerkats. No noticeable changes.

As first reported by @Corangurilla and @ZCChip in the “North American Asian Elephant Population” thread. “Dalip”, believed to be the oldest Asian elephant bull in the country, had unfortunately passed away this Thursday afternoon; following a series of health problems which had lead his overall health to decline for the worst. Being one of the zoo’s most iconic animals, I am certain that hearing about this bit of news would be very disappointing for everyone; especially to those who have known/seen him best.

I knew it was going to come at some point but hoping not too soon. This has hit me like a punch to the gut and ruined my Thanksgiving. I've been visiting him since 2008 and it was always a pleasure to see him. I hope his keepers and the Zoo Miami community will be ok handling his loss. I visited the zoo in March fearing that it could be my last chance to see him and am so glad I did!!! I hope that Nellie and Ongard will be ok. :(

Got back from the zoo today, a few updates, the Somali Wild Ass are completely gone it seems, sign is gone and it says to expect a new species soon, there was a Baja Blue Rock Lizard in a enclosure that was labeled for Black-Tailed Montane Pit Viper so maybe the snake will be moving soon. and most excitingly during the Kiwi tour I was told they have plans to build a public habitat for their male Kiwi soon, it was supposed to happen 2 years ago but was delayed due to Covid.

some things I forgot to mention about my last visit, there was a sign saying the Harpy Eagles are nesting again, and a sign saying that their female Linnaeus' Two-Toed Sloth is expecting soon. something interesting is that their Warthogs are signed as (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) which is the desert warthog, I thought all warthogs in the states were common warthogs(P. africanus). several smaller exhibit animals are gone like the electric eel, red siskin, surinam toad, columbian tegu, and black-and-white tegu) there was also some minor construction by the south american section so some animals like the central american boa and mona island frogs were off display.

They're Common Warthogs (spp sundevallii). P. africanus used to be considered a subspecies of P. aethiopicus, so the signage is just using outdated taxonomy.

Wow! I'm glad I was able to get some footage of them running around during my March visit. Hopefully Gaur can take their place. It'd be the perfect spot right next to the Indian Rhino and Banteng exhibits. Perhaps they can transfer the female over and get a new bull from the Bronx Zoo to restart their breeding program and expand the Gaur SSP.

There isn't a gaur SSP anymore. And with the new sustainability guidelines implemented by AZA, it takes much more than 2 zoos to start one. Not to say that they're not "allowed" to have and breed gaur anymore - just trying to temper expectations.

What hoofstock do you think will go there? Persian Onagers... Barasinghas? Something Asian or Southeast Asian right?

Eight sea turtles arrive from Massachusetts:

8 ‘Cold-Stunned’ Sea Turtles Arrive at Zoo Miami From Massachusetts – NBC 6 South Florida

Eight sea turtles from the state of Massachusetts made the trip to South Florida for winter in an effort to avoid the harsh conditions that could leave them incapacitated.

Zoo Miami accepted the turtles Friday when the Kemp’s ridley sea turtles arrived at Miami Executive Airport. The turtles were flown in by a group called Turtles Fly Too from Buzzard's Bay, MA.

Does anyone know what modifications are being made to the Black Rhino area and if they are back on exhibit now? Thanks.
