Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Zoo News 2013

I did overhear a docent several months ago telling an inquiring visitor that, "there are young lions coming eventually." The exhibit has gone through some minor remodeling over the last few months.

That's great news! I hope we get them soon, it feels weird having an empty lion exhibit.

Is that great news? That's a horrible lion exhibit. I like lions, but they really need a new exhibit for them.

Apparently one was designed back in the 1990s, but never built due to the ADA compliance issues that would be needed to renovate the area of the zoo where it would go.

Now that the 1998 bond project cycle is almost over hopefully there is planning for the next era of zoo improvements going on.

The Zoo Commission meeting minutes for September 17th have been posted.

Hightlights:

-Senior Animal Keeper gave an update on the Chimp troop introductions. The troop is currently made up of 17 chimps spanning 4 generations, and they are currently split up in different groups. Only 3 males have been introduced to the youngsters so far, but there is no plan to introduce the alpha male, Ripley, to them.
-As of September 17th, Rainforest of the Americas was 87% complete.
-They have spent $161.8 million of the capital project to date.
-The completion date for RotA had been moved to October 31st.
-Koala will be loaned to Lowry Park zoo for breeding.
-The zoo will be receiving Short-eared Elephant Shrews for the Desert Trail.
-Receiving Hyancinth Macaw for new Bird Show.
-Receiving male Sarus Crane for breeding.

The baby Okapi was born in August. The baby's photo in the recent ZooScape shows a real cutie! I considered scanning and uploading it, but don't want to infringe on any copyright laws.

Nooooooooo....... I'm hoping for a visit when I am back in Southern California in December/January. I won't be able to wait another semester.

You can still visit it, it just won't have any animals in it yet and will likely still have construction going on all over it;)

I say, get it right and take a few extra months to do it! My guess Otter Lord? It should still be by early spring; no later than late March. And fortunately, you are only as far away as San Diego.
