San Diego Zoo Zoo News 2013

Thank you for sharing this nice news BZF !
If I remember right in the 1990-ties a larger group of young animals was send to several US-zoos. Didn't none of these animals bred until now ??

Did you get that somewhere else? The article does not say they are the third facility (though they may be). It says they have bred three species of endangered lizards.

I got it from the SD Zoo Facebook page. That's where I learned about this hatchling, but I like to include articles when I report news, so I Googled it and came up with this article. Here's what it said on FB:
"A male Jamaican iguana hatched! This is the first time we've hatched this critically endangered species, and we're the third facility in the world to produce the species in captivity. This also makes us the first facility to reproduce the three most endangered lizards in the world: the Grand Cayman blue iguana, the Jamaican iguana, and the Anegada Island iguana. Congrats to Jeff Lemm and his team at the San Diego Zoo Global Institute for Conservation Research."

Today they opened the 4D theater in the children's zoo featuring RIO with three blue hyacinth macaws outside. The naked mole exhibit building was destroyed and the naked moles are in the nursery along with a tamandua. There are spider moneys in the old cat exhibit. The pigeon house is gone and the sloth exhibit is now just a keeper talk area. The rock hyrax has been replaced with a fennec fox. The old fox exhibit has a north american porcupine. Over by the petting zoo, the two bird cages now have a horned owl and a south american tree porcupine.

No devils yet!

They have taken three exhibits off exhibit in Africa rocks and put up signs on each one. One of the signs said "showcasing more than five different habitats and over a hundred exotic species.

Can't wait, 2017 is a long way away.

I saw the devils, they are out with the glass covered, but if you look over the glass you can see them.

The bus tour people said on Sunday that they hope the polar bear is pregnant but I swear they say this every year and no luck so far.

I saw 2 of the devils today, both were sleeping in the two glass fronted areas of the wall. I uploaded some photos to the gallery. Also a breeding pair of crowned eagles went on exhibit on Monday. The last breeding pair never produced a successful egg. The female died this year and it was discovered the the male had cataracts. They performed surgery on him and his is now off exhibit in a much smaller enclosure. Work is being done on the four smaller ungulate exhibits up by the polar bears. Rock work and raising the walls. Apparently there was at least one escape.

The zoo has also recently anounced the fledging of an andean condor in September that hatched at the zoo in April.

The devils were renamed in honor of the donor Conrad Prebys. Conrad, Debbie for his partner and Jake and Nick for his two sons.
