San Diego Zoo Zoo News 2013

I really hope that the zoo puts the snow leopards and amur leopards as part of the panda trek area. I think it would be a little ridiculous to keep those two leopard species in the "African Canopy" I really hope that doesn't happen.

Also, I think that the zoo should take this leopard exhibit opportunity and add another exhibit for the Clouded Leopards they have because I hate the horrible enclosure they currently are keeping them in, in Urban Jungle. At least that's where they were the last time I visited.

I was told that that the snow leopard and Amur leopard exhibits would be where the anoas and warty pigs are now. Which is between eagle trail and panda trek. That is no where near where they say the African Forest Canopy is going to be.

Unfortunately they are still there. :(

The last introduction of the male sun bear (Francis) and the female (Marcella) did not go well. They will be in separate exhibits for now. Marcella will be in the sun bear exhibit in Sun Bear Forrest. Francis will be alternating time on exhibit with a new male Andean bear, 2 year old Turbo, in the first exhibit past Sun Bear Forrest on Center Street. The Manchurian brown bear, Blackie, has died.

So the species list so far for Africa Rocks looks like:

Mammals: 15
African Leopard, Spotted Hyena, Patas Monkey, Vervet Monkey, Ratel, Fossa, Aye-Aye, Red Ruffed Lemur, Collared Lemur, Mouse Lemur, Sifaka, Ring-tailed lemur, Blue-eyed Black lemur, baboons (hamadryas i think, the picture was blurry), warthog

Birds: 5
Carmine bee-eater, Southern Ground hornbill, sociable weaver, red bishop weaver, beautiful sunbird

Reptiles: 1
Dwarf Crocodile

African Canopy says there will be over 30 species
Madagascar looks like 7 species of lemur and then fossas too
Africa Rocks in general says it will have over 50 species

I can't wait for 2017

Huge news. The zoo just recieved Mila, a 41 year old female african elephant from Franklin Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary in New Zealand. It closed after its founders death and everyone including Mila needed a new home. She will eventually be introduced to the herd.

Mila the Elephant Arrives at San Diego Zoo | NBC 7 San Diego

Well that's a fairly positive article, presumably the reporter wrote that directly from the SDZ press release, without doing any background research. Hence the omissions and inaccuracy.

I do hope that Mila can be introduced to other elephants, which I don't think she has seen for the last 30+ years. She was born in the wild, captured and moved to London Zoo at nine months old, before going to Honolulu, and then being sold to a NZ circus.

For more information about Mila, see this thread (and those linked within): http://www.zoochat.com/17/mila-elephants-future-317024/

TURBO came from Berlin Tierpark, born there 2010 to JUAN and JULIA.

Did you hear what happened to the 4 bonobos (JUNIOR, LOLITA, IKELA and CONNIE-LENORE) at the Wildlife Park?

Werent they supposed to be moved to the zoo? Or was it the reverse? I cant remember. Betsy will probably know.

They went to a sanctuary in Japan. San Diego Zoo now has 8 bonobos.

Some things I learned at the zoo today. Long time animal ambassador Norman the clouded leopard passed away. There is a 40 day old kagu chick in the bus loading aviary. The zoo only has two tigers, Connor 2.5 year old male born at the zoo and Tiga 4.5 year old female from the Bronx Zoo, I believe.

The orangutan Indah gave birth to a female on Oct. 25th. She is given the opportunity to go on exhibit every morning. So far she has only come out twice (I missed both of them). There is an Andean condor chick on Eagle hill. I haven't seen him yet. Reptile Walk small exhibits are being refurbished.

Its just been announced that 4 1/2 year old panda Yun Zi is headed to China in January... likely on the same flight as Atlanta's boys Po and Xi Lan. His last day on exhibit will be Dec 10 so those of you who can see him one last time have just 3 days. But with thats sad news comes good, his parents will stick around another 5 years.

I got my first look at the baby orangutan today. This is only the 5th time the mom Indah has brought her baby, Aisha (female) out of the bedroom. She is given the choice every morning. Today mom, baby and dad Satu were out from 9:00 to 12:53. I took 177 photos but I only posted 4 in the gallery. ;)

Very sad news. The male Malayan, Connor killed the female tiger Tiga yesterday. They had been placed together to mate.

Do you happen to have any more info on this (or know where we can find more info)? That's shocking.

How common are events like this?
