Poor Tiga

I tried to find a link on the internet but was unsuccessful. It was reported on our local ABC news.

That's terrible to hear :-( I do wonder how often this does happen....Dallas had this issue with their lions a few weeks back. Also, no mention on SDZ twitter account regarding the incident. Where was Tiga from?

We had this happen in Toronto 2 years ago with our Sumatrans. Hari, who oddly enough came to us from San Diego, killed Brynthe our very successful experienced female. They were being introduced and all seemed to be going well when Hari attacked her and crushed her wind pipe killing her instantly. Nothing keepers could do. Right now they are trying to introduce him to a second female, Kemala, but are being very cautious.

We also had a male Amur, Tonghua, who killed his first mate about a decade ago. He went on to successfully breed a number of times with the first females replacement, Tatianna.

I remember being told back then that cats can be very tricky to introduce. Sometimes its easy. Sometimes they get into fights. Sometimes it results in the females death.

These are big cats we're talking about, they have territories which they will defend with their lives so it's not very surprising that they don't take the introduction of a new animal very kindly. Their enclosures are their homes, for many all the know, combine that with the emotions of finding a new member of your species randomly in your home and the overall aggression of wild Felines, and you'll find this not to be such an uncommon event. Incidents usually don't end in death, though.

Happier news, Masai giraffe Bahati gave birth to a female calf on Sunday morning.

Wasn't another of Mek's cubs involved in a fatal incident before? A couple of years ago a female cub killed her mate at another zoo. Either way, it's very sad.

El Paso Zoo: Tiger Kills Mate In Surprising Attack

I am not sure what, if anything, to make of this.

The El paso incident was the one I was referring to. The female was one of Mek's cubs. Interesting that the incident at Toronto also involved a tiger from San Diego, albeit a different type and from the Safari Park...

There is now a fence in front of the exhibits across from the "Ice Age" 3D theatre. I asked 2 people (volunteer and bus driver) what was going to go in there and they both said the same thing. They are moving the mountain lions from Big Cat Trail. So of the five species on that trail 3 are getting new exhibits. I don't know where they plan to move the Siberian Lynx or Orson, the old the black jaguar.

The theater is on the right when you exit the Skyfari, where the takins used to be. So the new mountain lion exhibit will be on the left as you exit. Does that help?
