Does the Fishing Cat EEP still have a breeding program specifically for specimens from Sri Lanka?Another nice breeding - a male fishing cat cub born on 1th August. It has been the first surviving cub at Ostrava since 2018. It´s on show with its mother but both are very shy.
The zoo mentions that EAZA population is currently 55 animals, of them 6 born in current calendar year (after just 1 cub born in 2023 survived). The population is relatively aged and the program negotiates further imports from Sri Lanka and the US.

A hippo male Halloween arrived from Karlsruhe.
I don't know, but probably yes - there is no space for four adult hippos, especially for two males.Do you know if the previous bull at Ostrava (came 2019 from Antwerpen) is still alive?

The zoo will receive a second Asian black bear. The male (18) will arrive from Zamek Konopiste - a castle with a bear pit.

The exclosure indoor for the Nile hippo is not the biggest ..., I do hope they can look at creating a bigger exhibit along the expansion of the new savannah (more wishful thinking ... then probably reality)±Bouli moved to Zoo Berlin the same day Halloween arrived.

Also, out of curiosity, does anyone know the name of the female Nile Hippo born to Bouli and Holly on July 24th, 2020?
Has this species still any future in European zoos?
It is a group of endemic fish from Sulawesi's big lakes that are under threat! More species should be the focus of ex situ conservation breeding concerns both locally and overseas!Among first animal babies born on 1st of january 2025 are also Glossy medakas (Oryzias loxolepis) - small endemic fish from lake Towuti in Sulawesi. Ostrava obtained 1.1 last year and they breed well. This species is currently bts and Ostrava is the only zoo that keeps it (I´ve just asked ZTL to add it.)
