What is the Balkans' people view on the animal?
Here in Italy illegal shooting and poisoning is a major issue for the reintroduction of birds of prey, even vultures, as it's local superstition that they eat livestock, especially sheeps, and thus cause damage.
Here the bearded vulture is also commonly called "lambs' vulture", giving the impression that they will steal them and drop them off the sky when still alive.

I dont feel I can answer this question. For one, "Balkan" is a *********** of more than a dozen ethnicities with unique languages, believes and laws. We can only infer the overall situation from survival stories of already monitored vultures (cinereous, Egyptian, griffon) and other large birds of prey like eagles. And so far it looks like the situation in most Balkan countries is getting progressively better and vulture/eagle populations are growing. But there are still frequent instancies of (unintional) poisoning, and occasional shooting by hunters. Bearded vulture got extinct in most aera already in 1970s so local people have probably little to no idea such species ever lived there and most "old stories" got forgotten.

I meant no disrespect or generalisation of Balkan countries, I meant what's the people that live in the region's opinion, with the varying degrees of support.

I'm not sure but there hasn't been a birth there in eight years now. Hopefully this isn't the case as the cows in particular are quite valuable - perhaps a local could confirm?
Maybe it's Maxim. I'm not sure what his breeding capabilities are.

And I also find that elewiki isn't always accurate. I've been browsing it from time.to time on data over the European elephant population and news over the past year.

On international Children´s day, at 10 AM, there will be ceremony to open new yak enclosure, next to donkey enclosure and Lord Derby's parakeet aviary close to zoo entrance. New enclosure will be bigger, with some terrain changes, Tibetan cultural items (like a prayer mill) and repaired fence and stables. They will also be able to keep a male for breeding (now they have 2 females). source: Den dětí v zoo - Novinky - Novinky - O zoo - Zoo Ostrava

The zoo will no longer keep clouded leopards, as the female had to be euthanized and there are no viable animals to be imported.
Fishing cats will be moved into the now vacant enclosure, so their living conditions will get much better.

Yes. Clouded leopard EEP is now in the "bust" phase, age pyramid looks awfull and close to zero cubs are born. It´s possible Europe will lose this beautiful species.

This is absolutely dramatic development. The clouded leopard EEP for years did well and was a shining example how progressive and intensive animal husbandry and management would produced tangible and impressive results with a 'difficult to breed' species. I really do hope the EEP/EAZA can change the situation for the better from Point Zero, at which the European EEP population is now!

A chimpanzee was born today. The Evolution pavilion will be closed for a while due to this.

Jejich chov v zoologických zahradách sdružených v Evropské asociaci zoologických zahrad a akvárií (EAZA - the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) je řízen EAZA ex situ programem pro šimpanze. . . . #zooostrava #zoolife #zoo #animalphotography #zvirata #zwierzęta #simpanz #szympans #chimpanzee #zooborns #mládě #mlode #nachvilinazemi #visitostrava #ostrava #severnimoravaaslezsko #silesia #evoluce"
