Half-sisters (same father). They are same age and lived together their whole lives so I consider them socially bonded animals and would rather not separate them, even if that would mean to keep Tea permanently on contraception in Ostrava.

In other news, the zoo started search for a full-time amphibian keeper with experience. It shows that construction of Amphibiarium (house for frogs &co) runs according to schedule. End of construction works in October, building of individual tanks with vegetation till year-end, arrival of first animals in 2026. Opening in ? spring ? 2026.

Good point. As for whether or not they are (half) sisters: the 2014 studbook lists different parents for both of them. Tea is said to be from Kuba and Tessan, and Judy is said to be from David and Jannis. But it wouldn't be the first time that information from that studbook turned out to be wrong later on, often as a result of new tests.
 
I think non one has mentioned this, but another chimp female is pregnant. It is not naturally-reared female, so there is a possibility of complication with rearing her young (but she has had a lot of experience watching other females taking care of their babies, so there´s solid chance she´ll be able to do it).
 
Another batch of young ferruginous ducks (Aythya nyroca) has been released in South Bohemia, not far away from zoo Hluboka. Of them, 11 chicks donated by Ostrava, 7 chicks came from Heidelberg zoo. This species was locally extinct since ca year 2000 and this release is part of efforts to strengten miniature local population.

BTW I remmember that Prague zoo used to keep ferruginous ducks ca 20 years ago and all chicks from pinioned pairs kept in open-toped enclosures were left un-pinioned and free to leave once they fledged. The same system was also used by for example black storks at that time and some of those fledged storks used to return to zoo areal in next years during migration period, prompting visitors reporting "escaped birds" to keepers.
 
Record year for Zoo Ostrava for vulture breeding - 8 fledged vultures (4 bearded vultures, 2 Egyptian vultures and 2 cinereous vultures). 7 of the are already or going to be released into the wild (2 bearded vultures are released in Bulgaria, one of them died there, 1 is released in France and the last one in Germany, 1 cinereous vulture is going to be released in Bulgaria, other will stay in Austria for breeding program, both Egyptian vultures are going to be released in Bulgaria).
