A few weeks ago the zoo received a new species: Eurasian forest reindeer (Rangifer tarandus fennicus). Three males between 3 and 4 years old arrived from Moscow zoo to form a bachelor group at Wuppertal. They live in the former enclosure of the Pere David's deer/Milu (Elaphurus davidianus), which left the zoo in 2019 after researched had shown that the Sycamore trees (saplings) are poisonous for the Milu. The new enclosure for the Milu had a large abudance of Sycamore trees/saplings, therefore they were send to a different zoo.

On the 25th of April 16-year old male Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) "Manschu" was put to sleep due to a kidney disease. He was born in Zoo Schwerin on the 16th of December 2004 and arrived together with his brother "Wassja" at the zoo in May 2007. Zoo Wuppertal now has 2 Siberian tigers left, male Wassja and female Mymoza.

Luckly there is also good news from Zoo Wuppertal, 13-year old South African elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) Tika is pregnant again! She is expected to give birth to her second young somewhere in Autumn of 2022. This will be her first naturally conceived young, her one-year-old daughter "Kimana" is the result of artificial insemination. The father is "Tooth", who arrived from Ouwehands Dierenpark two years ago.

Hi, as i read. The southeast asia hall will be the inside area of Palau Boton. My question is. Are they already building the outside area of the Palau Boton project as this was announced a few years ago ?
 
On the 8th of May a female Siberian ibex (Capra sibirica) gave birth to twins.

Twee weeks ago the first 4 Pied avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta) of this year hatched.

Sadly on the 17th of May 18-year old lioness (No subspecies-status) Maisha was put to sleep due to age related illness, she lost most of her strength in her hind legs... Maisha was born in Zoo Wuppertal on the 9th of July 2003, the zoo now only has 3 male lions.

Recenlty at least 1 Spotted dikkop (Burhinus capensis).

Yesterday female Grant's zebra (Equus quagga boehmi) Fadila gave birth to a male, the father is 4-year old Seth who arrived from Burgers Zoo in 2018. The zoo now has 2.3 Grant's Zebra's, would this be a first time breeding of this species for Zoo Wuppertal?

Truly the end of an era.

The former polar bear habitat will be connected to the existing California sea lion exhibit, allowing them more space :)
 
Correct, forgot to mention that. Though I've wondered how they are going to do it, since the polar bear one is quite a bit higher on the hill than the sea lion exhibit. Besides, it really isn't that suited for the species anymore, so I understand the decision.

I do believe they should revamp that entire area for marine mammals excluding polar bears.

Sounds logical, though the website states that revamping or expanding the polar bear exhibit to be big enough for modern standards (or even building a completely new one) would be more than the zoo can handle financially, which makes me wonder if remodeling and landscaping the entire area for sea lions is that much cheaper, but I guess they had to choose one species anyway.
