Zlín Zoo zoo Zlín

I would be interested when the new lion exhibit will open, the zoo doesnt communicate any date yet. (An article mentions that all Czech zoos together keep 61 lions while our private sphere has currently 138 lions so there is enough "rescue" animals to source from.)
The Lion Rescue Center opened today. I visited this afternoon and will upload photos soon.

The opening date for the wombat exhibit has seemingly been postponed to 2027. Not sure about the opening date for Nusantara, as the website still states 2027, but it's been changed to 2026 on the map.
On the other hand, from my last visit it seems like the Australian pelican exhibit is gonna be turned into an aviary (which would be really nice). Maybe it could be one of the two Australian aviaries mentioned in the plans for the wombat exhibit?

To build an aviary over the whole Australian pelican pond would be rather major investment I think. While the two aviaries alongside the new vombat exhibit are mentioned only very shortly so I think they could be rather small (=cheap).

The zoo will also have to decide soon what to do with New guinea dingo exhibit next when the last old animal dies. That exhibit is not visitor friendly, so this corner of Australian area might be ready for some makeover.

BTW: A visitor posted pics of fresh gaur calf few days ago, the herd grew again.

It wouldn't be cheap, but to me it really seemed like there were preparations for netting over the exhibit. The pelicans were off-show and there was a sign that the exhibit is under renovation.

No no, I fully believe that the pelican area might get netted over. But I believe that this place wont be one of the two new aviaries mentioned with vombat plans.

Does anyone know more about the current giant otters at the zoo? According to my latest information (which unfortunately is no longer very recent), there should be seven (5,2) giant otters. The breeding pair Dagget and Mora, 2,0 young from 2022 and 2,1 young from 2024.

The number of individuals for Zoo Zlin on Species360/ZIMS had been six since at least the end of last year. Recently, this number has dropped to four. Given the age of the breeding pair, it would not be surprising if they had passed away. However, I am not certain about this.

Today I was in Lešná.
Part of tropical hall (from well before the aquariums and giant otter indoor exhibit to exit) is reconstructed and inaccessible to guests. Curl-crested aracari is on display, free flying (I think they weren´t there last time I visited Lešná).
There is no concrete plan what to do with old penguin enclosure after current sea lion one will be reconstructed and penguins put there. Several suggestions were mentioned: rebuilding it as a new aviary, as a new alligator enclosure, or to get a second species of penguin (African penguin).
I do not know if someone reported this, but the giant otter breeding male sadly passed away. Zoo do not know when (and whether) they will get new breeding male.
In a gaur enclosure were unsigned some geese (I think bar-headed) and black chickens.
In a giraffe, greater kudu, warthog and ostrich enclosure are domestic guinea fowls. 45 of them.

I asked a zookeeper about it today and she told me it hasn't been fully decided yet whether the net will cover the entire pelican exhibit, but probably yes. It's for the safety of the pelicans, because two of them were killed by a wild eagle-owl during summer.
Also, the barriers in the indoor viewing area at the new lion exhibit are finally gone.

The zoo can incease its investment budget by 280.000 eur thanks to higher attendance this year. This money will be put in use to upgrade several exhibits. Among them for gaurs.

The zoo would like to re-start gaur population in Europe (not explicitly stated, but I would understand it like they want to create gaur EEP, maybe?)
