Birds
129. Pink-eared Duck

beautiful bird. I only ticked them off earlier this year. You are really getting into your birds, Hix. It's good to see. I've noticed your lists on birdline. Before you know it you will be hooked. Let me know if you see a grey falcon in the illawarra area.

I still want to see a pink-eared duck. And a freckled duck. Apart for a few northern species (spotted whistling duck, radjah shelduck and the two pigmy geese) those are the only Australian waterfowl I haven't seen yet.

spotted whistlers are now breeding at FNQ and in Darwin. self introduced.

Almost went to the Illawarra today, but it clouded over in the afternoon so I went home and saw The Lone Ranger instead. Saw the Pinkears at Berrima.

So, if something shows up in a photo, but you didn't actually see it on the day (and recognise it as something different), you can still count it?

:p

Absolutely. Also, my dad only gave me enough time to take about 10 photos of the birds. I took the photos and had to ID them all later.

not for me. I would just consider that an annoyance that you didn't actually see it!

You southern hemisphere birders are far stricter in your rules than we are. You don't even count heard birds.

to quote ( or misquote) Kenny Bostick from the big year, "how do we know it's not another birder making bird noises?"

or something similar.
For me it's bird watching not bird listening.
