Never birded a cemetery before, but this bird was a good excuse to do so.

267. Painted Redstart

*Mute Swan (in the cemetery entrance pond)

Overall I have seen 277 including all ABA non-countable exotics.

Added three new species today:

268. Red-necked Grebe
269. Snow Goose
270. Tundra Swan

As a last birding trip of the year I went to a lake where I often get great waterfowl species. I saw nine species today of which two were lifers:
177) Eurasian Wigeon
178)Northern Pintail
:)

Birds
590. Oriental Cuckoo

Mammals
75. Sugar Glider

my list isn't going to increase any further this year. I was hoping to get away at Christmas and score a few more birds but instead I got sick and went nowhere. I won't have any free days again until the start of next year.

How about some more mammals.

37. Swamp Rabbit
38. Virginia Opossum
39. North American River Otter

Wrapping up the year on a big road trip though south Texas. Yesterday and today I've been crisscrossing the state (no easy task) in search of those last few elusive birds.

415 Red-cockaded Woodpecker - Picoides borealis (endangered)
416 Mountain Plover - Charadrius montanus
417 Red Knot - Calidris canutus
418 Red-breasted Merganser - Mergus serrator
419 Common Tern - Sterna hirundo
420 Nelson's Sparrow - Ammodramus nelsoni
421 Grasshopper Sparrow - Ammodramus savannarum
422 Le Conte's Sparrow - Ammodramus leconteii
423 Whooping Crane - Grus americana (critically endangered)

More to come tomorrow.

One day left

424 White-collared Seedeater - Sporophila torqueola
425 Ringed Kingfisher - Megaceryle torquata
426 Audubon's Oriole - Icterus graduacauda
427 Green Parakeet - Psittacara holochlorus

One last update to tidy up some herps I've been trying to photo ID - managed to get solid enough IDs for most of them - still torn on this gecko and clueless on the agama, if anyone has any thoughts:

http://www.zoochat.com/1001/unidentified-lizard-bishoftu-11-10-14-a-395087/

Firm (...enough for our purposes!) additions are:

20. Eastern Striped Skink - Trachylepis striata
21. Black-necked Agama - Acanthocerus atricollis

17. Pool Frog - Pelophylax lessonae
18. Egyptian Square-marked Toad - Amietophrynus regularis
19. Variable Reed Frog - Hyperolius viridiflavus

All Ethiopia except the Pool Frog (Belgium/Germany).

This means that (barring any miraculous appearances as I go about my business tomorrow) my final totals are:

Birds - 552 (UK: 160)
Mammals - 72 (UK: 27)
Reptiles - 21 (UK: 1 - sounds pathetic, but is 1/6th of UK reptiles (excl. sea turtles)!)
Amphibians - 19 (UK: 3)

:)

Added three new species today:

268. Red-necked Grebe
269. Snow Goose
270. Tundra Swan

Added eight more on my last birding trip of the year!

271. Red-throated Loon
272. Pacific Loon
273. Common Loon
274. Black-vented Shearwater
275. Black Oystercatcher
276. Surfbird
277. Ancient Murrelet
278. Glaucous-winged Gull

Being that it was my first year birding I set a goal of 100 bird species at the beginning of the year. I had no idea I was going to get close to 300, so that will be my goal for next year.

One more from Westport lake this afternoon

247. Smew

I'm hoping to make it to 250 in the next couple of days before starting again on Thursday.

A trip to Blackpool yesterday gave me 2 more

248. Shore lark
249. Long-eared owl

To finish the year my final bird was a lifer

250. Blyth's pipit

Everyone ready to start again tomorrow?

A few days in East Anglia gave my list a final boost:

212. Smew (Mergellus albellus) - actually this one was a couple of weeks ago, but I forgot to add it here
213. Great White Egret (Ardea alba)
214. Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus) - LIFER
215. Crane (Grus grus)
216. Shore Lark (Eremophila alpestris) - LIFER
217. Twite (Carduelis flavirostris)
218. Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis)
219. Bean Goose (Anser fabalis)
220. Water Pipit (Anthus spinoletta)

My final tally for 2014 was three short of last year's total. Tomorrow it starts all over again ...
