did you get out there? That's an outstanding bird for Australia, and I see it was easily viewable Saturday, Sunday and today.

179. Grey-headed Lapwing

:p

214. grey headed lapwing*
215. yellow billed spoonbill
.
I headed up to the Penrith regatta centre this morning to have a look for the GHLW. I got great views of it through the fence. It seems to be associating with a few masked lapwings. They seem to be tolerating it's presence. According to some other birders its only the 5th recorded sighting of this species in Australia. What time were you there hix? Did you go inside the complex or did you look through the fence? It would be good to get the number of people that have twitched this bird.

I went inside, as the bird was well inside from the fence. Arrived about midday and stayed for half-an-hour. There were six other people there. After it wandered back up to wards the fence I left and stopped outside the fence but couldn't see it. The other birders, however, were all heading over to the lake, so I guess it decided it wanted a change of scenery.

I read it is the fourth individual in Australia. The first was at Burren Junction, NSW, in 2006; the next two both in 2014 (at Amata, SA, in March and the other at Chiltern, Vic, in December); and then this current one.

I am almost tempted to go and see it myself! Fortunately I already saw the species last year in Thailand so my wallet remains unemptied for now.

You're right Chlindonias. The 4th GHL recorded in Oz. There's a concert planned at the site soon so with a bit of luck the bird might start travelling again and end up in NZ.

320. should be a black-shouldered kite, not grey-shouldered ;), I was mixing up Dutch and English names...

325. African comb duck
326. African scops owl
327. Black-crowned tschagra

328. African malachite kingfisher

In Germany for Zoohistorica over the weekend and picked up a new addition feeding over a Nuremberg pinniped pool:

184. Spotted Flycatcher - Muscicapa striata

:)

Three days spent at Rutland allowed me to get three new species for my year list, as well as having a generally great time at the Rutland Birdfair.

145. Yellow-legged gull Larus michahellis
146. Osprey Pandion haliaetus
147. Eurasian tree sparrow Passer montanus

Went to Abberton Reservoir today, where I managed to pick up another two new bird species for the year:

148. Great white egret Ardea alba
149. Spotted redshank Tringa erythropus

Also since last week I have been helping do a bat survey in the (rather spooky) grounds of an abandoned psychiatric hospital. This evening, I managed to see two new bats for my year list, both of which were lifers:

21. Brown long-eared bat Plecotus auritus
22. Serotine bat Eptesicus serotinus

329. Squacco heron
330. Wattled starling

Mammals

tentative:
43. African wild cat

I probably saw an African wild cat close to the house I stay, but I am still looking for additional characters to distinguish for sure from a domestic cat. But morphologically and behaviourally it was really different from the domestic cats around, I have some bad quality pictures which I will upload soon...
