Right, time for a fun post!

I've just returned from 8 days' safari in northern Botswana. The birds need typing up and the herps and inverts have some IDs pending but the mammals are ready to go, so here they are. It's a fantastic place for wildlife, no doubt about it.

24. African Wild Dog - Lycaon pictus
25. Plains Zebra - Equus quagga
26. Zambezi (Greater) Kudu - Strepsiceros (strepsiceros) zambesiensis

Additions from Khwai Community Area excursions:

46. Common Slit-nosed Bat - Nycteris thebaica

Updates to other classes to follow. :)

Botswana is indeed amazing for wildlife and congratulations on both serval and ratel! But when you start splitting greater kudu, I can't take you serious anymore :p

:D

It's because I standardise my mammal lists to Handbook of the Mammals of the World where the appropriate volume is available and their ungulates are very forward-thinking (hence my cautious, bracketed 'strepsiceros'!).

In the unlikely event I see another Greater Kudu taxon before the year's out we'll have to come to an arrangement. ;)

Almost more than we were, the guide was so pleased with that serval. The afternoon drive had started well but after a significant drive to (unsuccessfully, at that attempt) find the buffalo it had been very quiet for most of its second half when the beautiful spotted cat gave it a very significant lift! It was in daylight as well (unlike the ratel and wildcat!) and absolutely stunning. I've attached a photo to atone for my kudu-splitting.

Split the Kudu but don't split the Giraffe?

Nope, HMW doesn't, and I don't understand why either! (I wonder if it's just a more conservative author for that chapter?)

They would be G. giraffa if split along Groves/Grubb 'Ungulate Taxonomy' lines.

This inconsistent taxonomy is one of the 2 large drawbacks of HMW (together with the plates in HMW 3) imo, only the Bovidae family has been split as Groves would like to see it, where in the other families the taxonomy is more conservative. Even when the evidence for splitting giraffes is much larger than recognizing 11 species of klipspringer....

I now understand your taxonomy ;) It was not a personal attack, but I feel that Groves and his man get too much attention/recognition with their taxonomic ideas, especially because there are some obvious drawbacks with them....

When Mammal Species of the World 4th edition comes out, I have a suspicion that most of the Groves and Grubb splits will become canon.

Maguari,

I'm guessing from all the bold listings you've not been to Africa before? I'm wondering then about the warthog.
