I haven't updated in a while, because I haven't really been out birding and couldn't be bothered posting birds individually. So these are a bulk lot from the last month.

BIRDS:
596) Grey warbler Gerygone igata
597) European goldfinch Carduelis carduelis
598) European greenfinch Carduelis chloris
599) Weka Gallirallus australis
600) European skylark Alauda arvensis
601) Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella
602) Canada goose Branta canadensis
603) Mallard Anas platyrhynchos
604) Marsh (Baillon's) crake Porzana pusilla
605) Australasian shoveller Anas rhynchotis
606) Variable oystercatcher Haematopus unicolor
607) Caspian tern Sterna caspia
608) White-fronted tern Sterna striata
609) Spotted shag Stictocarbo punctatus
610) New Zealand bellbird Anthornis melanura
611) New Zealand robin Petroica australis
612) New Zealand tomtit Petroica macrocephala

MAMMALS:
84) New Zealand fur seal Arctocephalus forsteri
85) European hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus

Added a new moth to my year list three days ago, and two new birds yesterday (one at Abberton Reservoir and the other perched in the very tree I was surveying for bats):

151. Black tern Chlidonias niger
152. Little owl Athene noctua

Went out for a full morning of birding yesterday, hoping to find the pectoral sandpiper, red-necked phalarope and glossy ibis that have been seen locally. Spectacularly failed on all three counts, but did still manage to find one new bird plus my second reptile of the year, which ran over my shoe when it was crossing a path:

153. Spotted redshank Tringa erythropus

2. Viviparous lizard Zootoca vivipara

Only four more birds until I equal last year's count!

30/8/2017
214. australian hobby. ( one of those birds I've seen earlier in the year but just haven't remembered to tick off.)

A walk at dusk (19/8/2017) allowed me to see and hear one new species; although I heard many owls, I failed to see any (as is often the case for me).

124. European Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus

A few nights in the Dales (28-31/8/2017), got me a few new birds, including one I've heard a lot this year, but only just managed to see!

125. Common Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus
126. Tawny Owl Strix aluco
127. Barn Owl Tyto alba

here is the latest tally:

well, you certainly shot up the results table!

That is true, but I did hardly see anything special and missed quite a few of the standard species. But that is just the difference between field work in Europe compared with field work in Africa...

New place, new birds! Was going for a couple exciting woodpeckers that had been spotted there, but I'm happy with these two as well.

BIRDS:
152) Whinchat, Saxicola rubetra
153) Woodlark, Lullula arborea

Just to tidy up so I don't forget, a new identification from the Picos de Europa:

Invertebrates:
118. Iberian Owlfly - Libelloides ictericus

And a couple of coastal additions grabbed during a primarily social day in North Wales recently:

Fish:
10. Shanny - Lipophrys pholis

Invertebrates:
119. Rockpool Prawn - Palaemon elegans

:)

107) Cirl Bunting

19) Red deer

Both red and fallow deer in Hertfordshire are a lot shier than in the roe deer in Norway, and start fleeing as soon as you are within 80m away from them, whereas the Norwegian roe deer allow you to be no more than 4 metres away until they walk in the opposite direction.

Mammals:
8. Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae)
9. Rat (Rattus norvegicus)

Birds:
52. Black-Shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris)
53. White-Cheeked Honeyeater (Phylidonyris niger)
54. White-Breasted Woodswallow (Artamus leucorynchus)
