Did the Marrakech - Beni Mellal road once again, along with some night birding and finding some pretty cool species in Northern morocco as well (even though it was a brief visit).

111 - Glossy ibis , Plegadis falcinellus
112 - Black stork, Ciconia nigra
113 - Booted eagle, Hieraaetus pennatus
114 - Osprey, Pandion haliaetus
115 - Red-knobbed coot, Fulica cristata
116 - Great spotted cuckoo, Clamator glandarius
117 - Little owl, Athene noctua
118 - Tawny owl, Strix aluco
119 - European nightjar , Caprimulgus europaeus
120 - Little swift, Apus affinis
121 - Common kingfisher , Alcedo atthis

In 2 days or so , I'm heading to Ifrane which means I have chances to spot Barbary macaque. Fingers crossed! ;)

Some more exciting additions from the last 2 weeks!

BIRDS:
122) Common cuckoo, Cuculus canorus
123) Red-backed shrike, Lanius collurio

124) Common swift, Apus apus
125) Common redstart, Phoenicurus phoenicurus
126) Sedge warbler, Acrocephalus schoenobaenus

REPTILES:

1) Common lizard, Zootoca vivipara

AMPHIBIANS:
2) Brown frog, Rana temporaria

I also saw a female white-headed duck on the same day as the cuckoo, which would thus have been #122. However, it's still uncertain whether that individual is truly wild or not, so I'm not going to count it until I have confirmation it is a wild animal and not an escapee.

I have now gone through all of my Thai bird sightings properly and put them into my own system and I can correct/update the list here.

Firstly, #164 should actually be Small Minivet (not Scarlet)

Newly identified bird:
368) Buff-breasted Babbler

Additions simply missed off when posting the list in this thread for whatever reason:
369) Indian Cormorant
370) House Swallow
371) Dusky Crag Martin
372) Asian House Martin

There could possibly be some more additions by identification, but I think that will probably be all the changes and corrections.

That means a total of 280 species seen in Thailand, of which 231 were lifers. I plan to post a breakdown of numbers of species, lifers, and year birds seen at each location in my trip thread probably this weekend.

It's also worth noting that my lifelist currently stands at 995. I wonder what lifer #1000 will be. I hope it's not a boring totally nondescript warbler or something :p. Interestingly, my lifelist would be at 999 if I included heard only species which I don't, but I keep track of them anyway.

An addition from my garden today:

373) Common Redstart

Hopefully I should get a fair few additions over the next couple of days as I do some more proper birding around Poland for the public holiday long weekend.

Birds
144. Chinese Pond Heron

145. Striated Heron
146. Black-Crowned Night Heron
147. Brahminy Kite
148. Whiskered Tern
149. Little Green Pigeon

Seen in Jakarta
150. Freckle-breasted Woodpecker

:p

Spent today pottering around a series of South Yorkshire ex-collieries, now nature reserves and country parks. The, seemingly now-resident, scaup was the excuse, but the highlight ended up being that for the first I managed to time being out and about with the local passage of Black Terns. I'd thought I was doomed to miss them for ever!

Additions are from Thrybergh, Silverwood (where my grandad worked at the colliery back in the day) and Orgreave.

139. Common Tern - Sterna hirundo
140. Black Tern - Chlidonias niger
141. Common House Martin - Delichon urbicum
142. Greater Scaup - Aythya marila
143. Northern Wheatear - Oenanthe oenanthe
144. Grey Partridge - Perdix perdix
145. Common Swift - Apus apus

:)

1/5/2017
163. diamond dove
164. diamond firetail
165. striated pardalote

From Wheldrake Ings yesterday (21/4/2017):

100. House Martin Delichon urbicum
101. Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus

I've already surpassed last years total, and it isn't even half way through the year. :)

All from a walk in the North York Moors (30/4/2017):

102. Common Crossbill Loxia curvirostra
103. Northern Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe
104. Mistle Thrush Turdus viscivorus
105. Red Grouse Lagopus lagopus
106. Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis

Birding in Ifrane is always a great experience!

122 - Golden eagle, Aquila chrysaetos
123 - Short-toed snake eagle , Circaetus gallicus
124 - Peregrine falcon , Falco peregrinus
125 - Levaillant's woodpecker , Picus vaillantii
126 - Western jackdaw, Corvus monedula
127 - Red-billed chough, Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax

Some really nice species and I should add more when ID' all the little brown jobs. When it comes to mammals I got what I wanted. ;) :

12 - Barbary macaque, Macaca sylvanus

and a little extra :

13 - Asian garden dormouse, Eliomys melanurus

I was just totalling up the year so far. On post #295 (25 March) you were up to 14 mammals, so I've put you down for 16 now.

Spent today pottering around a series of South Yorkshire ex-collieries, now nature reserves and country parks.
I googled colliery. I assumed it was probably a coal mine, but it was a new word for me. Then I wondered if it had anything to do with collies (the dogs), so I googled that, and apparently collie is probably derived from the same root because the original breed was black.

And also you saw black terns at the ex-colliery which is a nice wordy circle I guess, especially if I write it as being such...

my last ones for April.

444) Chestnut-winged cuckoo Clamator coromandus
445) Black-chinned yuhina Yuhina nigrimenta
446) Oriental honey-buzzard Pernis ptilorhynchus
447) Radde's warbler Phylloscopus schwarzi
448) Chestnut-crowned warbler Seicercus castaniceps
449) Chestnut bulbul Hemixos castanonotus
450) Short-tailed parrotbill Paradoxornis davidianus

451) David's fulvetta Alcippe davidi
452) Slaty-bellied tesia Tesia olivea
453) Streaked wren-babbler Napothera brevicaudata
454) Siberian thrush Zoothera sibirica
455) Grey-backed thrush Turdus hortulorum
456) Brown-backed needletail Hirundapus giganteus
457) White-eared night heron Gorsachius magnificus

458) White-rumped munia Lonchura striata
459) Black-headed greenfinch Carduelis ambigua
460) Vinous-throated parrotbill Paradoxornis webbianus
461) Japanese white-eye Zosterops japonicus
462) Hill prinia Prinia atrogularis
463) Brown-breasted bulbul Pycnonotus xanthorrhous
464) Rosy minivet Pericrocotus roseus

I only saw 35 year birds for all of April, which is quite extraordinary. Partly it is because I'm in Vietnam where the animals have all been eaten, partly because a lot of the birds I have seen are ones I've already seen elsewhere, and partly because for a lot of the month I've either been concentrating on other things (mainly langurs) or have been in places with few birds. On the plus side, 13 of those 35 have been lifers so that's alright.

The year list totals so far. I think Ituri's reptile (or herptile) list and Pleistohorse's bird list are both one out though.

Sadly for your word game, I found out last night that Thrybergh Country Park is on an area that was built as a water reservoir, rather than as part of the Thrybergh (Kilnhurst) colliery as I believed. The Orgreave and Silverwood sites are the old colliery sites proper, though.

Just out of curiosity (mainly because I'm wondering if your total is higher than mine :p), do you have a number for your current year totals?
