Today I went on a small tour to a few local birding sites. I hoped to find some of the typical winter waterfowl species, which I did (though Pintails were absent). I was especially glad with fantastic views of two Water Pipits, which are scarce enough in my area that they're easily missed.

I think you have the Americas species of anhinga here as opposed to the Indian/Oriental darter which is Anhinga melanogaster? Unless my taxonomy is off.

BTW your list makes me miss home. Do you mind sharing where in the country you live/bird?

Another birding day today, as I won't be able to go out at all next weekend for work reasons (and the weekend after at least one day will need to be zoo-y!).

Planned as a full day at Frampton, we went via Thoresby in Nottinghamshire as there was a big group of hawfinches that had been reported as performing well. The first three birds are from Thoresby, the rest are from Frampton, including a cracking ringtail Hen Harrier and a Cetti's that did the full series of tantalising glimpses and noises over about 20 minutes, before going to ground and forcing us to give up on an unambiguous (i.e. 'countable'!) view, only for us to encounter (the same?) one just 100m further along the path back to the car being perfectly visible...

Both mammals were roadside additions.

Bird-wise this is my best-ever first week of the year, but it's now going to be back to dribs and drabs for the next couple of weeks.

About the anhinga, your probably right, I’ll correct that.

I had a great day at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and decided to take the scenic route to the zoo (a 6:30am train from Brisbane to Gold Coast). I quite enjoyed spotting birds from the train carriage in the early morning and saw some species I didn’t expect to see so early in the year.
The majority of the waterbirds, turtle and eel came from Currumbin itself. I also picked up an unexpected (and long-overdue) lifer!

I might go out on a walk later today as well, but this is the start of my new year list. For the first (and probably last) time of the year I am now leading the mammal list.

Mammals
1.
European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus (En)
2. Eastern grey squirrel Sciurus carolinensis
3. European brown hare Lepus europaeus
4. Red fox Vulpes vulpes

Unfortunately, mammal 4 and birds 25-26 were only seen because they were flushed by a New Years' day hunt. Not the scenario I would like to see any wildlife really.

Saw my fifth mammal of the year this morning from my bedroom window:

5. Reeve's muntjac Muntiacus reevesi
