ZooChat Big Year 2021

How long were you there? Over a hundred species of bird alone, that's pretty impressive.
Just over a week.
It can't have been for long. There's something screwed up with his dates though because in the USA Challenge thread he's just listed an ASDM visit as being on the 20th March.
You're right, that should be the 30th. I'm generally not good with remembering dates.

24. European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)
25. Nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos)

So.... you're presumably claiming to now hold the record for earliest Nightingale sighting in the UK this year, and at a time which is near-unprecedented for the species overall? :p

10. Common water strider

Not entirely sure you can claim this one :p given a) presuming you mean the species usually given that name, it's a European species and b) those species found in your neck of the woods are pretty tricky to differentiate without close examination.

You're right, that should be the 30th. I'm generally not good with remembering dates.

Even dates from less than a week ago?

Got research grade on Inaturalist. and Found it in the neck of the woods.

And again.... it's not a species found in the USA :P

Fine, I will put scientific names in the future, I have always referred to Aquarius Remigis when talking about the Common water strider, didn't realize there were others called that.

Aquarius Remigis? Thats what I'm referring too....

Proving the exact reason why at the start of this thread there is a note about adding scientific names....
If you give common names it can lead to confusion..

And provide enough plausible deniability that people can get away with making vague but unsubstantiated claims :p but as I said, there are a *lot* of near-identical species in your area, and A. remigis isn't even the most commonplace of the dozen found in Minnesota.

Fine, I will put scientific names in the future, I have always referred to Aquarius Remigis when talking about the Common water strider, didn't realize there were others called that.

Hate to break it to you, but what is ''common water strider'' in my side of the world, is known as Gerris lacustris. This is because we live in completely different places of the world where the concept of what species is tagged ''Common'' is different. So my appologies that to me this is not common knowledge  .This is why I will always stress to put down scientific names. Especially for invertebrate species since species can have multiple common names not known in other parts of the world. A scientific name is always known. As a fellow invertebrate enthusiast I thank you for considering to use scientific names in the future!

Okay can you stop just ganging up on me? Thank you

Not my intend.

And another I saw today:

Birds
205. Tree Swallow Tachycineta bicolor

Easter weekend update. My first herp and some nice inverts from an afternoon in the parents' garden on Easter Sunday, then a trip out to North Cave Wetlands and the Hagg Lane Flash/Misson area on the Notts/Yorks border today to top up the feather quotient.

Birds:
96. Whooper Swan - Cygnus cygnus
97. Ruff - Calidris pugnax
98. Common Gull - Larus canus
99. Eurasian Blackcap - Sylvia atricapilla
100. Green-winged Teal - Anas carolinensis
101. Garganey - Spatula quequedula
102. Western Cattle Egret - Bubulcus ibis

Amphibians:
1. Smooth Newt - Lissotriton vulgaris

15. Common Wasp - Vespula vulgaris
16. Tawny Mining Bee - Andrena fulva
17. Dark-edged Beefly - Bombylius major
18. Common Green Lacewing - Chrysoperla carnea

(the lacewing is an interesting one as it's a very difficult group to identify in the summer, when multiple species are on the wing - but only one species overwinters as an adult in the UK, so the trick is to find one before about the end of April, then it's safely C. carnea :D )

On my way home from school, I saw this bird perched in a large nest way up in a tree.

Birds:

24. Bald Eagle

Thanks to Great Argus, I was able to identify my first species of amphibian for this year! And as the weather here is getting warmer, I also spotted my first invertebrate species of this year!

Amphibians:

1. Western Chorus Frog

Invertebrates:

1. Western Honey Bee

Since my last update, I've managed to spot another three new bird species, all from the house:

48. Lesser black-backed gull Larus fuscus
49. Red-legged partridge Alectoris rufa (NT)
50. Canada goose Branta canadensis

Also, while I'm not going to count it, we had a male peacock turn up this morning - briefly wandered around a few of the front gardens and then disappeared again. Not sure where it came from - I live in a rural area and I certainly haven't heard a peacock calling here before.

Had another couple of new birds seen from the garden - number 51 is, I believe, the first time I have seen this species actually in my garden. Also, added my first herptile and several new invertebrates in the garden:

51. Eurasian treecreeper Certhia familiaris
52. Barn swallow Hirundo rustica

1. Slow worm Anguis fragilis

5. Buff-tailed bumblebee Bombus terrestris
6. Brimstone butterfly Gonepteryx rhamni
7. Dark-edged beefly Bombylius major
8. European peacock butterfly Aglais io
9. Black garden ant Lasius niger
10. Common green lacewing Chrysoperla carnea
11. European red ant Myrmica rubra

BIRDS
110 Common Grackle - Quiscalus quiscula
111 Pileated Woodpecker - Dryocopus pileatus
112 Ring-necked Pheasant - Phasianus colchicus
