This past Saturday I took a drive to Rhode Island. I wanting to revisit the Biomes Marine Biology Center for a little while now and that gave me a good excuse to chase some western rarities in the state as well. Since about 11/23 (Thanksgiving here in the US), Rhode Island has been hosting some pretty spectacular western vagrants that have remained relatively stationary since. Sedge Wren, Pacific Loon, Townsend's Warbler, and an insanely lost Pacific-Slope Flycatcher have all been being seen with frequency the past couple weeks. I mapped out a route for the flycatcher --> loon --> warbler --> aquarium with the wren being saved for if I had some daylight left as that's been the most difficult to find from what I hear.

A SECOND Western Flycatcher has turned up in New England this morning! In Connecticut but close to the Rhode Island border. The original RI bird is currently also being seen at the usual spot so definitely two different birds in the region now.

Interestingly people seem to be agreeing that the RI bird appears to be a Pacific-Slope while the new CT bird has tentatively been identified as a member of the Cordilleran group. Officially they likely won't be identified further than Western Flycatcher but still interesting nonetheless.

Wonder how they're basing those IDs, given Pacific-slope and Cordilleran have long been considered among the most difficult separations, if even possible to do for vagrants.

I am currently on the way home from a four day visit to Bali. The first two days were spent in the Ubud area primarily to talk to the Begawan Foundation, whom we support, about their Bali myna program and future plans.

Mammals
I checked out a couple of bat roost locations, and still working on the ID for one.

The third and fourth days were spent at Saninbuana Eco Lodge, located in the mountains west of Ubud at about 800 metres. It is noticeably cooler than the lowland areas as well as being rural with good forest, and I was interested to see some of the fauna at this height. The lodge had also been involved with Bali myna program and we were interested in discussing what prospects there might be for future conservation cooperation.

Probably one of my last updates of the year for this thread. Went out to Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama, on a freezing day after a huge storm the night before just to get outside and enjoy the clear weather. The last thing on my mind was seeing any new species, but I brought my binoculars just in case.

Well, it's a reminder that no matter how seemingly bleak the conditions, your chances of seeing a new animal are never 0. While there, I only saw two birds, one of which was a lifer: the Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker! (the other was of course the omnipresent American Crow) There were several sapsuckers around based on calls, though I was only able to draw in one. Still, this was an amazing way to (most likely) end my year of new bird species. I poked around the edge of a lake as well in the hope of seeing some waterfowl - this rewarded me with a few young Striped Shiners (side note: identifying these fish was a pain. They have darker upper sides and lighter underbellies separated by a faint black line, silvery sides, transparent fins, and a small pink spot at the base of their pectoral fins, which describes most of the fish in the Birmingham-Pelham region. The only way I was finally able to identify them was narrowing down which small fish (3-5") in the area have notably forked tails).
I will be going to Kentucky to cave kayak later on in the month which will hopefully provide some new bats and maybe fish as well. Very much looking forward to this as the southeast cave ecosystems are something I have been meaning to explore for a while now.

Unfortunately, I ended up 0/4 on the bird front.. I started with the flycatcher, by far the easiest of the vagrants to see. Every day since it's discovery it has been found around 9am feeding at one location and then around 1pm it moves to a secondary location, with some infrequent sightings at a third spot, all on the edge of a small patch of forest within a state campground. I arrived around 8am to the sight and stayed until around 11:30. After over a week of consistent sightings, Saturday became the first day the bird was not seen on-schedule. After spending so many hours on the flycatcher, I knew my plans were at risk of entirely falling about if I did not keep moving. I made my way to the loon spot, only about a 15 minute drive away. The loon had been seen around 9am that morning, but by this point in time it was long gone and has not turned up since. While I was combing the beach, other birders slightly ahead of me had spotted a few Bonaparte's Gulls and a single Lesser Black-Backed Gull, two other species I lack for the year. Unfortunately, by the time I'd caught up the birds had seemingly moved further down the shoreline. I did pick up one unexpected duck while here, however, ultimately my only new bird of the day.

It was now around 1pm and I had a choice: try for the close-by flycatcher again or continue forward. It was about an additional 30 minutes drive to the aquarium and 45 to the warbler. I decided to grab some lunch nearby and see if anyone would report the flycatcher. When nothing came in over the next 20 minutes, I made my way towards the aquarium. I decided to abandon the warbler as I'd learned it hadn't been seen since the prior Tuesday. I arrived, paid, and as I stepped up to the first tank, a report came in that the flycatcher had reappeared at its normal afternoon feeding spot. I conducted a rather rushed visit through the (thankfully) small aquarium, then hightailed it the 40 minutes back to the flycatcher spot, arriving at its feeding grounds with about 20 minutes of solid daylight left. As I had a feeling would happen, I arrived to find no birders remaining and no bird to be seen. A rather frustrating end to a long day with a long drive home ahead of me.

689) North American Ruddy Duck Oxyura jamaicensis

As mentioned, the ruddy duck seen while looking fruitless for the Pacific Loon is the only new addition for the day despite many potential additions in the area. That said, in a way that is a testament to the success I've had this year, as while I didn't see much in the way of new or targeted birds, I did see a fair number of species I'd seldom or never seen prior to this year, including Red-Throated Loon, Horned Grebe, Razorbill, Brown Creeper, and Golden-Crowned Kinglet.

To add to this already too long post, I've finally finished combing through my Kenya photos for new IDs. There are still a few tough bird and especially amphibians that remain unidentified, but I'm not too sure I'm going to be able to get much further with those that remain, so this will likely be my last update with Kenyan species.

~Thylo

Was reviewing my big year list and updating my lifelist as we approach the end of the year and have two minor updates to my bird list: 1) was reading about camaropteras and found that the Green-Backed and Grey-Backed forms have been lumped on pretty solid grounds, so I will be removing the separate listings for them from my list; 2) I realized I counted Least Sandpiper twice, first when I was in Florida in February and again when they migrated back into the northeast. Therefore, I will need to bring my Big Year list back down to 691.

With the end of the year fast approaching, will I be able to crack 700?

~Thylo

A suprisingly good update

Birds
Nice to see this waterfowl sp. the last common one I needed for the year.
241. Redhead (Aythya americana)
A small drab bird flushed from the side of the road while driving through Coles County IL, clearly saw white outer tail feathers, 11/4
242. American Pipit (Anthus rubescens) (Lifer)
This is the insane one, not only a lifer, or even just a county record, but the First state record! It was nice to see my 4th hummer sp. of the year this morning, even if the ID was a bit tricky at first until we got some diagnostic pictures.
243. Broad-tailed Hummingbird (Selasphorus platycercus) (Lifer)

Fish
Multiple times earlier this year
White sucker (Catostomus commersonii) (Lifer)

Insects/Inverts
283. Ground beetle (Stenolophus ochropezus) (Lifer)

294. Canadian petrophila (Petrophila canadensis) (Lifer)
295. Clouded sulphur (Colias philodice) (Lifer)

Birds
It was nice to finally see the most common species I was missing for Illinois. Partially this is because siskins are irruptive and they haven't had an irruption here since the very beginning of when I started birding. They really are a much better-looking bird than I had expected from field guides and photos, more like a nicely streaked winter plumage goldfinch than the slightly yellow, drab house finch I thought they'd be.
244. Pine Siskin (Spinus pinus) (Lifer)

Some previously seen species:

Fish
12. Striped shiner (Luxilus chrysocephalus) (Lifer)

Insects/Inverts
296. Giant euscoma moth (Euscoma giganteana) (Lifer)

297. Garden fleahopper (Mircrotechnites bractatus)
298. Yellow-legged pleuroloma (Pleuroloma flavipes)
299. F-winged barklouse (Graphopsocus cruciatus) (Lifer)
300. One-spotted Stink Bug (Euschistus variolarius)
301. Common striped woodlouse (Philoscia muscorum)

This might be it for me this year, but hopefully I find a short-eared owl or other nice wintering species before then.

Mammals
26. Big Brown Bat Eptesicus fuscus

While I'm technically considering this a lifer as I have never before positively identified it, it is near certain I've seen it many times before.
Was this identification from seeing a stationary individual or did you use acoustics?

Life seems to have conspired against updates this year; I managed to add various lifers in birds including Chinese Egret to complete my world egrets, and Black-faced Spoonbill to complete my world spoonbills, both in Korea. However, I am only going to add three lifer mammals, simply because they look like they are additions to the total list
22 Whiskered Myotis, Myotis muricola- Singapore
23 Malayan Field Rat, Rattus tiomanicus - Singapore
24 Risso’s Dolphin, Grampus griseus- Anglesey

One more to add after encountering some very showy birds at RSPB Old Moor on Saturday.

Birds:
207. Bearded Reedling - Panurus biarmicus

(UK: 201)

:)

No Waxwings yet?

Old news! :D

An odd pair of new additions today. Didn't spend as long with either as I'd have liked as the forecast rain showers were actually quite persistent and unpleasant rain but certainly both nice species to see - albeit two species where seeing these two in the UK on the same day does nothing for your climate anxiety...

Ibis was a single bird at Swillington Ings (St Aiden's Nature Park) while the waxwings were a group of over 30 that has been hanging out in a Sheffield suburb for a while now - biggest group I've seen, just wish the weather allowed a bit more linger time and photography..!

In other news, these two also hit my UK 200 for the year. :)

Birds:
205. Glossy Ibis - Plegadis falcinellus
206. Bohemian Waxwing - Bombycilla garrulus

(UK: 200!)

:)
