I spent the day traveling around Helsinki trying to find as many rare birds that had been previously sighted. Thankfully I was able to easily find all my target species, with a few that I wasn't even looking for being picked up as well.

Mammals

2. European red squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris

Birds

40. Gray heron, Ardea cinerea
41. Little grebe, Tachybaptus ruficollis
42. Great egret, Ardea alba
43. Gray wagtail, Motacilla cinerea
44. Coal tit, Periparus ater
45. Eurasian nuthatch, Sitta europaea

My last day on Anglesey was spent travelling around the island to various birding locations. We also got lucky with a particular mammal that the island hosts and the mainland does not. The species seen:

Red Wharf Bay:

Spinnies Aberogwen:
85) Coal Tit Periparus ater

As is tradition for me, I did a Big Day on January 1st. I didn't get to do one last year, since I was in Costa Rica - but my incidental non-Big Day birding that day still beat out my total today by a lot. This isn't even my top total in a Wisconsin New Year's Big Day, as the snow storm made visibility difficult. Still always fun to start out the year, though!

Happy New Year everyone. First post of the year for me. It was awfully quiet pelagic birding on my way back to Brisbane. However, the very calm water brought in a large pod of new dolphins and the big white tropicbirds were a constant at least. Red-footed Booby was a lovely surprise. A few species were quickly picked up around the Port of Brisbane as I got back to Brisbane yesterday and then I went to Sandy Camp Road Wetlands Reserve today to search for showy Spotless Crakes without success but did see a reasonable range of species. It’s always good to get all three Brisbane fairywrens in a day and I enjoyed some choice dragonflies like Australian Tigers. I hope to get into the rainforest, out west and out to the mudflats soon to bulk up the list.

First post for me this year and first time starting the big year from 1st Jan so looking forward to seeing what I come across as well as reading all the great lists! I only list birds I have managed to get a decent photo of. It was a fortunate start on a few days out with some of my favourite small birds and great views of flying cranes.

Whipsnade offered a familiar bird and nice views of a Kestrel

A bit of garden snapping yielded

Slimbridge on a chilly but very bright day yielded some great views including Coal tit, Crane and a Kingfisher. Might be some other small waders from this one, need to take a closer look at the pictures. There was also a non counting but wild Black Swan, one of a couple of vagrant birds seen regualrly around the reserve, this time annmoying two mute swans who 'own' one of the smaller water areas. Nice pictures as was super close but not one for the number overall.

And a first mammal

1. Grey Squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis

So far my nicest wildlife observation this year was a group of several (7 to 10, saw them from a train so didn't get an exact number), including one melanistic individual. I've seen a fair number of roe deer before, but this was my first melanistic one.

Mammals

1) Western roe deer (Capreolus capreolus)
2) House mouse (Mus musculus)

Birds

1) Carrion crow (Corvus corone)
2) Western jackdaw (Coloeus monedula)
3) Common wood pigeon (Columba palumbus)
4) European herring gull (Larus argentatus)
5) Grey heron (Ardea cinerea)
6) Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
7) House sparrow (Passer domesticus)
8) Eurasian blackbird (Turdus merula)
9) Feral pigeon (Columba livia domestica)
10) Common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus)
11) Black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus)
12) Eurasian kestrel (Falco tinnunculus)
13) Northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus)
14) Canada goose (Branta canadensis)
15) Western greylag goose (Anser anser anser)

As it happens, I didn't get out today. However, I still nearly doubled my bird list just by watching from my bedroom window:

8. Stock dove, Columba oenas
9. European robin, Erithacus rubecula
10. Eurasian blue tit, Cyanistes caeruleus
11. Western jackdaw, Coloeus monedula
12. Common buzzard, Buteo buteo
13. Pied wagtail, Motacilla alba

Yesterday was really not all that great for birds, seeing as I only added a single additional species to my year list:

14. Coal tit, Periparus ater

However, my visit to Colchester Zoo today doubled the number of bird species I have seen this year. The first three were seen at home just before setting out, numbers eighteen through to twenty-two were on seen on the way to the zoo, the next five were on the zoo grounds and the last one was seen on the way home afterwards:

15. Carrion crow, Corvus corone
16. Great spotted woodpecker, Dendrocopos major
17. House sparrow, Passer domesticus
18. Feral pigeon, Columba livia
19. European herring gull, Larus argentatus

24. Common gull, Larus canus
25. Dunnock, Prunella modularis
26. Mallard, Anas platyrhynchos

Birds
43. White Wagtail Motacilla alba
44. Northern Shrike Lanius borealis
45. Blue Jay Cyanocitta cristata
46. Yellow-rumped Warbler Setophaga coronata
First lifer of the year, in the form of a twitch I did today:

Birds
47. Brown Creeper Certhia americana
48. Red-breasted Nuthatch Sitta canadensis
49. Western Tanager Piranga ludoviciana

First full birding day with a nice mix of local classics like dipper and Willow Tit, and a few surprises like Whooper Swans at Ogston. The biggest part of the below (28-50) were from Carsington Water, where the regular winter treat of a wintering Great Northern Diver was joined by the additional and much less regular winter treat of a wintering Red-throated Diver. A few other stops in Derbyshire and some incidental birding fill out the rest - and a specific drive up to Big Moor to prevent Eastern Grey Squirrel being Mammal One more-or-less out of spite was entirely successful. :D

Oh yeah, I meant an American Herring Gull Larus smithsonianus, I must have recorded it down wrong
BIRDS
3. Rock Pigeon (Columba livia)

After a couple days of only seeing squirrels and the sparrows, I finally saw some rock pigeons in my area today. There are definitely a lot of animals I could've saw but I wasn't as alert as I wanted to be.

Hello. As expected, my visit to Parque Marapendi and Bosque da Barra were filled with wildlife (albeit I visited the latter at around 11 in the morning).

Also, I have misidentified the Lampropholis skinks I have been seeing. All the ones I have seen this year so far should be L. delicata (Delicate Garden Sunskink) rather than L. guichenoti (Common Garden Sunskink).
Saw this one in the moat of the tree kangaroo exhibit at Taronga today.

Reptiles
5. Eastern Snake-necked Turtle (Chelodina longicollis)
