Zoochat Big Year 2025

Monday morning, I flew into LA for my final event, which ran from after lunch till Wednesday night. This meant I had most of Thursday free before my flight home. I visited Madrona Marsh, which was only a short distance from the hotel. I had visited here a number of other times, including at the start of the year. It was totally dry and very quiet, no doubt as I was visiting right at the end of summer.

Swung by St. James's Park this evening after visiting the British Museum. Though it was too dark to identify some of the birds I saw (namely some species of grebe), here's what I was able to confidently identify (and I'm pretty sure I've excluded all the captive birds with clipped wings that are present in the park, though of those I think I only saw the pelicans)

Birds
110. Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)
111. Greylag Goose (Anser anser)
112. Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea)
113. Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra)
114. Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca)

About time! The local mammal species that I had been wanting to see for probably the longest. As I type this I have clear views of a pup that has emerged from its grassy den, resting in sunshine. It has been returning to cover every so often.

22) Rakali/Australian Water Rat Hydromys chrysogaster
Back from sunny Cairns. I’m happy with the overall results. The only major dip was Lumholtz’s Tree-Kangaroo (again…) and a few common birds like Papuan Frogmouth and Yellow Honeyeater. But the big three – cassowary, croc and striped possum were achieved. A few additional highlights; a fleeting glimpse of a Musky Rat-Kangaroo in the late afternoon, large flocks of Sarus Cranes over farmland, around 40 sightings of Rose-crowned Fruit-Doves on Green Island, wild reef sharks and fantail rays, huge green frogs and a double mega rodent sighting with a Rakali and White-tailed Giant Rat within minutes of each other in the heart of Cairns. The Daintree was particularly unique I found and I want to spend more time there; beachy mangrove forest with rainforest made for an interesting blend of species. One minute fiddler crabs and archerfish were emerging while I walked past cassowary poo and calling riflebirds. A special place. In terms of bugs, lots of enormous katydids on night walks including the Spiny Rainforest Katydid which a few Australian zoos are acquiring which was so cool to see in the wild. Peppermint Stick Insect was another bucket list insect. Finally, a tropical flush of butterflies and spiders was most welcome. More identifications will come through in the coming days.

Great list. Lumholtz tree kangaroos are a nemesis of mine too. I've also missed the Papuan frogmouth a couple of times. On one occasion I was closing in on one calling only to have my way barred by a scrub python curled up over the path. Win some and loose some.

Just got back yesterday morning from an 11-day trip to Cambodia. Wildlife-watching was not the main purpose of the trip, as I was not the one organising it; I just tagged along, and if I had been organising the trip, I would have gone to many different places in search of more wildlife.
Nevertheless, I was happy with what I did see.

Just realised I counted 135 twice. I should be on 169 birds.

I have seen this bird on three continents this year but somehow have not listed it here.

337 European starling Sturnus vulgaris

An interesting visitor to our little dam, the joke being there are no fish in it.

338. Little pied cormorant Microcarbo melanoleucos

There are plenty of good birdwatching locations near my university campus but it's unfortunately too far inland to see most of the wading and shorebirds. Luckily, I had my fall break this weekend so I drove back home and made sure to take advantage of the last time this year I could see these birds before most of them left for migration and the weather became too cold. I went to a small coastal town called Topsail Beach, a beautiful and somewhat secluded location with vast areas of marshland and beaches. I had two target species for the day: Black Skimmer, a bird I've been trying to see for years with no success, and Reddish Egret, an uncommon visitor to North Carolina that was reported on eBird at this location just two days before my visit. When I got there, I was surprised to see just how many birds there actually were: huge flocks of gulls, pelicans, and plovers were constantly flying overhead. Running alongside the side of the beach was the estuary, where there was a huge mixed flock of white ibises, terns, and the skimmers I have been looking forward to finding for so long. Most of my time was spent just standing still in one spot; the flocks of birds flying past or overhead seemed to be endless! I was only there for just shy of an hour and a half, but I walked away with five new lifers! One of those five was unfortunately not the Reddish Egret, but I guess it gives me an excuse to come back again, which I definitely will be doing in the future.
