There were a few major no-shows, but I think it is a nice start of the list.

Hoping this is fine to add, but during work I managed to get 2 species to tick for this challenge. All seen btw during regular visitor hours and the like. I'm not a zookeeper so none of those privileges or the like.

Burgers' Zoo
1. Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris)
2. Rodriguez flying fox (Pteropus rodricensis)

Not an issue, as the rules state - as long as you see the animals during regular visitor hours and as Joe Public would, you're all set!

3. You have to see the animal via normal public access (i.e. not including zookeeper for the day or photography days behind the scenes) during normal public opening hours (i.e. no scoring because you know the keeper and can get access before/after hours). Basically the species has to be seen as Joe Public would (so sorry to anyone who was planning an offshow to Plzen, it won't count ;));

A first-time participant so a quick question - my work involves being a zookeeper, during normal public opening hours, so can we be a tad lenient with #3?

A first-time participant so a quick question - my work involves being a zookeeper, during normal public opening hours, so can we be a tad lenient with #3?

First off, welcome to the challenge! :D

If you work as a zookeeper, it's not strictly an issue. The animals just have to be seen during normal opening hours (so in London Zoo's case any time from 10am until closing), as a member of the public would see them (from an area where a member of the public could also see them). If you're standing in a staff only area and see the animal in a private part of the enclosure, or in a way that the public wouldn't be able to do, then it won't count. For example, seeing the animal in an offshow den that isn't visible from a public area wouldn't count, and neither would being able to go and look into an animal's nestbox as the public aren't able to do that either. The third rule is to prevent unfair advantages essentially: using this year's topic as an example, a quick offshow at Plzen would get someone easily around 30 odd species for this challenge at least, which can quickly propel someone into a lead. Not everyone has the connections to do this.

To sum up, as I said to @Ursus earlier in the thread, if you're at work when you're in the zoo then it's not a problem! You just need to have seen the animals in a way that anyone could, when the zoo is actually open to the public :) I look forward to your participation!

One month in, people are already racking up a fair bit of a leaderboard. Here is the leaderboard so far!

HOMIN96 – 58
ThomasNotTom – 29
pipaluk – 23
pangolin12 – 22
KevinVar – 20
Marhi – 19
MagpieGoose – 17
Mr. Zootycoon – 16*
Najade – 13
Lemur02 – 13
Vision – 8
lintworm – 7
migdog – 7
Ursus – 2

*following a PM discussion, we have decided that Barneveld doesn't count as a collection purely because one wouldn't have any reason to visit the school if one wasn't invited, hence Mr. Zootycoon's tally is at 16, not 24 :) keep it up folks, some strong entries already!

I'll be bumping up my score even further with a visit to Exmoor at the end of next month with the one and only @Brum ! I'm happy, and a little surprised to be in the top 5... loving the challenge so far :)

How did @Brum go from being the one everyone snubs to the one with whom everyone goes on zoo trips? Have I accidentally fallen into an alternative universe?

Entries from my first couple of zoo visits this year. Doubt my list will be too big this year, don't have many zoo visits confirmed as yet...
