ZooChat Challenge Global 2022

Do Ailuridae count towards this challenge? Might be blind but I don’t see the family on the list of allowed animals.
No, they are not on this challenge. Looks like I just saved you from a load of optometrist bills ;).

Lol, unfortunately not, off to buy new glasses next week!

May I ask why? Only because the majority of sources I can find suggest Red Pandas are primarily nocturnal/crepuscular (and they’re usually sleeping when I see them in zoos!).

Good luck on the glasses! My insurance just covered a new pair for me earlier this year :).

As stated earlier in the thread:
I will not that this is not a perfect list on what animals are nocturnal

thanks for the reply! I must of missed that comment. I mistakenly thought this was all nocturnal species!

To be fair, at the end of the day, this is just one species, that everyone will get so it really makes no difference!

Second Zoo of the year:

London Zoo 04/02/22

14. Malagasy Giant Jumping Rat (Hypogeomys antimena)
15. Red-Necked Wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus)
16. Grey Slender Loris (Loris lydekkerianus)
17. Moholi Bushbaby (Galago moholi)
18. Pygmy Hippo (Choeropsis liberiensis)
19. Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo leo)
20. Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica)
21. African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus)
22. Philippine Crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis)
23. Turquoise Dwarf Gecko (Lygodactylus williamsi)

Was a bit disappointed the potto was a no show, will have to go back for them! Also didn’t see the aye-ayes. I assume their enclosure is in the nocturnal section but didn’t see any signage. There was a small empty enclosure by the pottos though. Is that them? Missed the tamandua and the tenrec too!

The aye aye are in an area at the end of the ring tailed lemur indoor housing corridor, not downstairs with most nocturnal species. The area next to the Potto exhibit is where they(potto) were held previously, last year nothing was in there. Tamandua are in the main rainforest area, tenrec were first exhibit on right in nocturnal area ( moonlight World) when I was there last year

Ah thank you for the info, will definitely go find them next time. The lemur walkthrough was closed so not sure if the indoor was accessible?

Yep, knew where the tamandua and tenrec were, just couldn’t see the tamandua anywhere (nor the sloths but I already have those guys for this challenge) and the tenrec had no red lighting in its enclosure so it was just a pitch black box!

Yesterday a visit to Zie-ZOO in the Netherlands and had hoped to see a huge number of species for the Challenge. Did find indeed a good number but also missed another good number because many species stayed inside due to the cold weather :(. So this time no Clouded leopard, no Pallas' cat, no Serval, no Siberian weazel, no Striped hyena, no Wolverine, no Maned wolf, no Raccoon ( ! ), no Striped skunk ( ! ) , no binturong and no Dusky pademelon...
Now to the species I did see :
8 - White-nosed coati - Nasua narica
9 - Parma wallaby - Macropus parma
10 - Eastern grey kangaroo - Macropus giganteus
11 - Bush dog - Speothos venaticus
12 - Common cusimanse - Crossarchus obscurus
13 - Giant anteater - Myrmecophaga tridactyla
14 - Chinese dhole - Cuon alpinus
15 - Snowy owl - Bubo scandiacus
16 - Indian crested porcupine - Hystrix indica
17 - Dwarf mongoose - Helogale parvula
18 - Meerkat - Suricata suricatta
19 - Yellow mongoose - Cynictis penicillata
20 - Banded mongoose - Mungos mungo
21- Tayra - Eira barbara
22 - Yellow-throated marten - Martes flavigula
23 - Cuvier's dwarf caiman - Paleosuchus palpebrosus

@vogelcommando Last I checked and unless someone's updated the rules, mongooses don't count.

By checking the rules myself I discovered you're completely right ! Thanks for correcting me. Must have thrown them all in the group "small brown carnivores" .... sorry.
After taking away Common cusimanse, Dwarf mongoose, Meerkat, Yellow mongoose and Banded mongoose I'm now standing on 18 species.

I need to start planning longer visiting hours for this Challenge. I knew it is going to be a trouble :)

Just a clarification on geckos...is this ANY gecko (true geckos, leopard geckos, etc) as long as it's not specifically a Day Gecko? Or is it just "true" geckos (again, minus the day geckos)?

To make it easier, we opted for all geckos bar day geckos since those are the most obvious and most common diurnal geckos.
