All in all, not bad going considering I have yet to visit many UK collections this year and have seen very few marsupials and felids :) a pity that rays were not included alongside sharks on the grounds people usually can't be bothered to work out what they have seen, as the number of ray taxa I have seen this year would have pushed me close to 150!

Next time... Four-toed hedgehog is not in the Desert house anymore, but the Long-eared hedgehog had newborn offspring!

They must have departed in the fortnight or so between our visits, as I *did* see them.... and the antsangy, I'm afraid :P to my abject shock, their last-remaining individual was active when the lights started to brighten within the enclosure just before closing time!

This challenge has made me realised how poorly represented geckoes are among my local collections. Off the top of my head, there is a Centralian Knob-tail Gecko on-display at Currumbin and that’s actually it. I hope there are some species off-show somewhere – they surely can do a lot better than that!

On a happier note, I was overjoyed to finally see an actual leopard in the flesh for the first time!! The Striped Possum was another lovely addition to see as well as for the first time. I had a chat with the keeper there and there is only a pair at Wildlife Habitat and the rescued male at Walkabout who has some pretty serious spinal issues, totalling only three Striped Possums in Australian zoos.

57) Tasmanian Brushtail Possum Trichosurus vulpecula fuliginosus
58) Tammar Wallaby Notamacropus eugenii

A few more species that have been added recently. Wildlife HQ continues to add interesting marsupials like the pademelon and rock-wallaby which create about a dozen macropod species on-show currently. The Short-eared Brushtail Possum (also known as a black blob in a log) was also on-display again. Currumbin's collection always provides interesting critters to add and the Greater Gliders have been superb to see since they went on-display in late 2021.

A small haul from Werribee, but of far greater importance was my first ever zoo visit with my six year old niece. She's clearly a budding zoo nerd: after the safari bus ride, I asked what her favourite animal on the ride was, expecting it to be inevitably either 'giraffe', 'rhino' or 'zebra'. But no, her favourite was "all the different antelopes".

We'll make a Zoochatter of her one day.

Werribee Open Range Zoo - 4/6/2022

38. Hippopotamus - Hippopotamus amphibius
39. Cheetah - Acinonyx jubatus

I'm already reasonably close to having exhausted all the exotic species of relevance available in Australia - there might be another 10-12 left that are theoretically possible, though certainly I will see less than that. Luckily I've still got plenty of marsupials to pursue. My informal target for the year is to exceed my monotreme and marsupial total from 2020 (32).
