Rosamond Gifford Zoo is a zoo that seems to get me a few surprise species every time I visit:
Fly The Coop (3/11):
3. Helmeted Curassow- Pauxi pauxi

We're Gonna Need a Bigger Trap (7/10):
7. Cape Porcupine- Hystrix africaeaustralis

Don't You Forget About Me (6/13):
6. Large Hairy Armadillo- Chaetophractus villosus

Don't Turn On The Lights (10/10) NOW COMPLETE:
10. Large Hairy Armadillo- Chaetophractus villosus

Challenges Complete: 5/29

Next month is when my bigger zoo visiting for the year is going to pick up, but as of right now I have a solid foundation for being only four months into the year. I know I'm not going to finish all of the challenges (mainly because of umbrellabirds, sun bears, pandas, and a few aquatic mammals), but with the upcoming zoo visits I have planned I should be able to get closer than ever before!
The Asian box turtles in Buffalo Zoo's reptile house have finally stopped evading me! With this, there are only two species at Buffalo Zoo I've yet to see this year, both of whom count for the challenge (ring-tailed lemur and ocelot).

Hot Blooded for Cold Blood (16/24 plus chelonians):
Chelonians:
18. Indochinese Box Turtle- Cuora galbinifrons
19. Chinese Three-Striped Box Turtle- Cuora trifasciata

Challenges Complete: 5/29.
Unless either the lemurs or ocelot are visible at Buffalo next week, next time I post in this thread should be when I start to finish a lot more challenges.

I had a pouched redemption at the San Diego Zoo today, seeing all three species of marsupial that I missed on my visit last month! It took a lot of patience and many return trips, but I got to see a very active common wombat and the very tip of a brush-tailed bettong’s tail :p I was also able to spot both species of turtle in the West African dwarf crocodile exhibit in Africa Rocks!, revisiting the exhibit late in the afternoon to minimize the glare.

San Diego Zoo (San Diego, CA) -- 02 May 2023:

Let’s Give This Another Go (13/∞):
  1. Brush-tailed bettong (Bettongia penicillata)

I need to fill some important gaps in my top 50 European zoo list and Beauval and Le Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine were probably the two most important institutions on the continent where I have never been. I was happy to change this last week. They are rightfully deserve their glory and I highly recommend the whole Loire Valley area in the heart of France. Added also the two Paris zoos, Parc des Félins (+Terre De Singes, not to be underestimated), Aquarium Porte de Doree and the three Lisbon collections on the way home.

Started the turtles/tortoises count from 53 instead of 54.

Finally warm enough for lemurs to be outside at the Buffalo Zoo!

Embrace the ABC's (9/36):
9. Ring-tailed Lemur- Buffalo Zoo

Island Hoppers (17/22):
17. Ring-tailed Lemur- Lemur catta

Challenges completed remains 5/29.

I'm guessing the general consensus is that any subpopulations of Chelonoidis niger are regarded as simply subspecies and not full species for the tortoise challenge, but just for clarification, are they? I know they have very complex taxonomy which is still a matter of great debate, so just wanted to clear it up in case.

For the purposes of the challenge they are all niger - largely because there are so many hybrid individuals around and it prevents argument about whether a given animal was pure or not - but it definitely seems like they represent a whole array of species in fact.
