Well, looks like I forgot a category last night:
Late to the Party (8/8) Complete!
Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus), seen at the Phoenix Zoo
Black-tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys ludovicianus), seen at the Phoenix Zoo
Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana), seen at the Phoenix Zoo
California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus), seen at the Odysea Aquarium

North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis), seen at the Henry Vilas Zoo
American Badger (Taxidea taxus), seen at the Henry Vilas Zoo
Wapiti (Cervus canadensis), seen at the Milwaukee County Zoo
In my defense, I posted super late last night and interpreted the trial as a line break .
Alright, here is the updated list of completed trials:
Ring 'n Ruff
Planet of the Apes
Three Little Pigs
Sharknado
Release the Kraken
One-Zoo Wonder
Late to the Party

7/36
I swear I’m not making stuff up as I go, but I completely forgot that I saw a toucan at Odysea in January. Allow me a moment…
The Coelacanth Stamp of Approval (5/12)
Keel-Billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), seen at the Odysea Aquarium
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to spend the rest of the day hoping and praying that the Henry Vilas Zoo reopens their aviary before July. See ya!

Toronto Zoo: 18 June 2022
Three Little Pigs (3/3) - COMPLETE
3. Common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus)
(Side note: If I hadn't already had One-Zoo Wonder beforehand, I would've gotten it with this challenge on today's visit. North Sulawesi babirusa and Red river hog were also seen.

Bovine Bonanza (8/20):
7. Common eland (Taurotragus oryx)
8. Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra)

You Must Be This Tall to (Not) Fly (1/4):
1. Common ostrich (Struthio camelus)

Bona Fide Rarity Hunter (1/3)
1. Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra)

Completed: 5/36
In Progress: 24/31
Finally saw the chamois!

Some questions:

I'm guessing only animals seen at zoos visited in 2022 count, or are you allowing animals seen in the last months of 2021 as well?

Can an individual animal seen at a single facility be used for two or more challenges? For example, can I use the Bobcat I saw at Zoo Miami for both "Cat Got Your Tongue" and "8 North American mammals" challenges, or would it have to be a Bobcat seen at two separate facilities?

Also, what if an animal was seen in 2022 but recently died? For example, the Bald Uakari in Los Angeles is no longer alive, but I saw it in February so can I use it for one of the challenges?

A little late to the party, but this sounds fun. I have been fortunate to visit a number of zoo facilities in 2022 and hopefully will do several more in the summer. Here's where I'm up to.

Coelacanth Stamp of Approval

Based on your overall progress (and the fact that San Diego's leopard shark is in the same exhibit as their penguin colony), I'm guessing you've at least started some of these? You should post your progress on *all* challenges when there's updates to make, not just when you finish them.

Otherwise welcome to the game.

And the fact he used King Cobra for the venomous snake challenge, meaning he has at least 1/3 for Kingmaker.

Sorry, was going to post my progress of the rest of the challenges in my next post. Here it is

Silk & Stinger (4/6)*
1. Mexican Redknee Tarantula (Brachypelma smithi) @ Central Florida Zoo
2. Red-rumped Tarantula (Brachypelma vagans) @Staten Island Zoo
3. Chilean Rose Tarantula (Grammostola rosea) @ Shell Factory
4. Flat Rock Scorpion (Hadogenes troglodytes) @ Central Florida Zoo

*I also saw an unsigned scorpion that looked like an Emperor Scorpion @Staten Island Zoo. Am I allowed to count an animal when I'm not sure what exactly the species is?

Rookery Roundabout (1/6)
1. African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) @ San Diego Zoo

Alfred Russell Wallace (0/1)

The Kingmaker (2/3)
1. King Cobra
2. King Vulture @ Los Angeles Zoo

Coelacanth Stamp of Approval (10/12)
1. Coquerel's Sifaka @ Los Angeles Zoo
2. Pygmy Hippopotamus @ Zoo Miami
3. Rodrigues Fruit Bat (Pteropus rodricensis) @ Staten Island Zoo
-
4. Secretary Bird @ San Diego Zoo
5. Common Motmot (Momotus momota) @ Staten Island Zoo
6. Greater Roadrunner @ Staten Island Zoo
7. Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) @ Flamingo Gardens
-
8. Japanese Giant Salamander @ National Zoo
9. Mangshan Pit Viper @ San Diego Zoo
10. Panther Chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) @ Audubon Zoo (1/25/2022)

Staten Island Zoo had Frilled Lizard and Zoo Miami had Spotted Hyena but I think they were both no-shows when I went, so I'm not counting them. I'm heading to New York to visit family for a few weeks. Hope to knock both off on an inevitable trip to the Bronx.

I see. But all of the species you have listed so far were definitely "shows", correct?

I will sometimes allow stuff like scorpions to be counted at genus level, but I'm leaning towards no on this one given it wasn't signed.

Alright, I am looking to join. Sorry, I am so late to the party, but looks fun! I have read all 20 pages of this thread to make sure I am familiar with what's going on, but have one question still.

7. Report your progress on this thread as you go along. Most people did a pretty good job of keeping up with their updates last year, so for now I don’t think any sort of time limits are necessary – but if people start procrastinating and then dropping everything all at once I will change that.

How far back can I go since I am joining late? I will be completing a 2 week long road trip of Texas zoos on 6/23, which I plan on using, but have some from earlier in the year. I have good documentation on everything I saw/did not see. (I take photos of everything I see with their corresponding signs at every visit, then go back and write it up.) Can I use the start of the year? I obviously would not put anything I can't verify I saw for sure. I visited a few zoos in Mexico at the very start of the year that may be helpful with a few categories.

I know there is also already a winner, so maybe not as concerned with this? Just don't want to go all the way back if it is too late.

Bona Fide Rarity Hunter (3/3): COMPLETE
  1. Neotropical cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasiliensis) - Caldwell - 02/11/22
Not looking to blow this whole thing up as a new comer, but I believe Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas has these as well. They were signed and I believe I saw them. However, it was too hard to make a positive ID as they were sitting quite a ways away across a lake. They are signed along the with Sandhill Crane.

I'm guessing it still doesn't change any results as their is likely something else @Kudu21 has already seen that would qualify. The European Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) also at Caldwell might. I haven't done quite enough research to say it's the only one, but from what I have done it appears most other holders of herring gull have smithsonianus. EDIT: After doing a bit more research, it seems their is some controversy around Larus argentatus and whether Larus smithsonianus is a subspecies or separate species. According to the IUCN, they appear to be separate species, but as possible speculation, Caldwell may have a smithsonianus and signed it as argentatus depending on who they go off of for it.

Here is an image of the sign at Gladys Porter for the cormorant:

Interesting development. With that information and nothing else, it does make Caldwell as a solo holder far more ambiguous at least.

I also think it's very likely @Kudu21 has seen another species that would count at this point; I'll leave it up to them to decide which one they'd like to substitute.

All interesting, but irrelevant as a) we follow IUCN taxonomy, and b) we follow whatever the zoo signage says.
