ZooChat Challenge UK 2018

The last one has just died, has it not?

Yep, we've unfortunately become aware of this fact since posting the above :P :( I believe it actually died immediately before the New Year, but the news didn't break for a week or so.

Of absolutely no significance at all, but I just counted up the number of animals I could potentially get if doing this challenge in New Zealand zoos, and came up with 51(ish).

Wow, that puts things in some perspective (of how relatively lucky we are in the UK, especially with the rest of Europe on our doorstep).

Oi! Crowthorne I've warned you before. :D

No, you can't have it as Kew is not primarily a zoo/animal attraction.

I'm sure there's plenty of proper zoos you can seem an Indian Peafowl at without lowering yourself to Royal Botanic Gardens.

Sorry @Shorts couldn't help myself. Good thing peafowl are common enough to get at a proper zoo :)

Black-headed Weaver? Although the birds here are labelled as Ploceus melanocephalus they are actually village weavers.

A few from Colchester (2 missed!)

60 Black Headed Weaver

Does the same apply to these birds? According to zootierliste only Blackpool is listed as holding P. melanocephalus

An addition from our visit to chester last wek following clarification from shorts.

46. Belanger's Tree Shrew

To avoid confusion (especially where zoos label them incorrectly) I'm going to allow both species on basis:

1. Per wikipedia (I know, I know) they're both (sometimes) known as Black-headed Weavers;
2. They're both weavers with black heads;
3. Who knows which one the book meant :confused:.

I hate to keep adding to your pile of admin on this challenge Shorts (really, I do :/ ) but there are no kangaroo mice or eastern diamondback rattlesnakes kept in UK collections; should kangaroo mice be given an asterisk and can western diamondbacks count instead of easterns?

Kangaroo Mice (shouldn't that be rat?) -yes it should have an asterisk, I didn't realise Bristol no longer had them. Unfortunately, I can't re-edit so long after the original post*.

Eastern's instead of Western's* -after much vacillating and at the risk of annoying a few reptile purists I'll allow it on basis:

1. No Western's to see anymore (and it's a nice snake to see);
2. Abitrator's whim.

Finally, whilst I'm welcome to anymore queries of the above ilk I'm going to time limit them to the end of January (to be fair to myself and to not mess around those taking part). Let the final round of cajoling commence. :D

This doesn't mean I'm not open to further clarification/arbitration -just that the list becomes final at the end of January (no more swaps or additional "flexibility").

*Occasionally a kindly moderator comes along though......

Just a minor point :p the request was for Westerns instead of Easterns, hehe.
