Zoochat (Tea)Cup 2025

Two very enjoyable matches full of discussion and debate, which as I predicted ended up being pretty close - one in particular was neck in neck until the very end (despite one ungrounded 5:0 vote which had to be discounted per the rules):

League A - Zurich vs Paris Zoo & Menagerie - ASIA

Zurich - 63/120 points - 52.500%
Paris - 57/120 points - 47.500%

League C - Beauval vs Cologne - PRIMATES

Beauval - 66/130 points - 50.769%
Cologne - 64/130 points - 49.231%

Hopefully the next two matches will be just as vibrant....

European (Tea)Cup - League B - Copenhagen vs Antwerp & Planckendael

European (Tea)Cup - League D - Stuttgart vs Nuremberg

Time - and your participation - will tell!

Although a lot more one-sided than the last pair of matches, there was still a decent amount of discussion and debate to be had:

League B - Copenhagen vs Antwerp & Planckendael - TROPICAL FORESTS

Copenhagen - 36/110 points - 32.727%
Antwerp & Planckendael - 74/110 points - 67.273%

League D - Stuttgart vs Nuremberg - BIRDS

Stuttgart - 96/140 points - 68.571%
Nuremberg - 44/140 points - 31.429%

All four collections in the next batch of matches are, I suspect, among the favourites to go far:

European (Tea)Cup - League A - Chester vs Vienna

European (Tea)Cup - League C - Beauval vs Burgers

I suspect there are some interesting discussions ahead of us......

A pair of matches with very satisfying levels of participation, both in terms of discussion and votes cast:

League A - Chester vs Vienna - MOUNTAINS AND POLES

Chester - 56/150 points - 37.333%
Vienna - 94/150 points - 62.667%

League C - Beauval vs Burgers - LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

Beauval - 61/155 points - 39.355%
Burgers - 94/155 points - 60.645%

The next pair of matches see the return of some contenders who have sat much of the Cup out thus far....

European (Tea)Cup - League B - Wroclaw vs Antwerp & Planckendael

European (Tea)Cup - League D - Leipzig vs Plzen & AkvaTera

Hopefully participation remains as vibrant as it was for the last batch of matches!

Two quieter matches with fairly clear-cut results, but worthwhile nonetheless:

League B - Wroclaw vs Antwerp & Planckendael - MISCELLANEOUS MAMMALS

Wroclaw - 70/120 points - 58.333%
Antwerp & Planckendael - 50/120 points - 41.667%

League D - Leipzig vs Plzen & AkvaTera - AFRICA

Leipzig - 69/110 points - 62.727%
Plzen & AkvaTera - 41/110 points - 37.273%

Hopefully the next pair will attract more discussion and votes; I certainly think there is plenty of scope for this to occur:

European (Tea)Cup - League A - Basel vs Artis

European (Tea)Cup - League C - Frankfurt vs Cologne

We shall reconvene in three days!

Disappointingly, both matches turned out to be the slowest yet both in terms of discussion and voting participation:

League A - Basel vs Artis - TEMPERATE FOREST AND WOODLAND

Basel - 37/85 points - 43.529%
Artis - 48/85 points - 56.471%

League C - Frankfurt vs Cologne - GRASSLANDS AND DESERTS

Frankfurt - 38/95 points - 40.000%
Cologne - 48/95 points - 60.000%

However, I have hopes that the next two matches will turn things around given the fact that all collections concerned are heavy-hitters....

European (Tea)Cup - League B - Prague vs Wroclaw

European (Tea)Cup - League D - Tierpark Berlin vs Plzen & AkvaTera

Time - and your votes - will determine the answer :) and remember that even if a result seems obvious, it is still worth voting as this will increase the overall sample size and hence the reliability of the result, with outlier votes having less of an overall impact!

Although discussion was a little subdued than I hoped, there were some interesting points made and participation was definitely a lot higher - so all things considered I cannot complain!

League B - Prague vs Wroclaw - PRIMATES

Prague - 69/115 points - 60.000%
Wroclaw - 36/115 points - 40.000%

League D - Tierpark Berlin vs Plzen & AkvaTera - MOUNTAINS AND POLES

Tierpark Berlin - 81/130 points - 62.308%
Plzen & AkvaTera - 49/130 points - 37.692%

The next two matches are up, and have the potential to be quite interesting....

European (Tea)Cup - League A - Artis vs Paris Zoo & Menagerie

European (Tea)Cup - League C - Frankfurt vs Burgers

Enjoy :)

An interesting pair of matches, all things considered - one ended up a lot closer than I initially expected, whilst the other provoked a decent bit of conversation despite being rather one-sided in the end:

League A - Artis vs Paris Zoo & Menagerie - BIRDS

Artis - 52/105 points - 49.524%
Paris - 53/105 points - 50.4761%

League C - Frankfurt vs Burgers - TROPICAL FOREST

Frankfurt - 28/115 points - 24.348%
Burgers - 87/115 points - 75.652%

The next two matches are already underway, with a little over two days left to run:

European (Tea)Cup - League B - Budapest vs Wroclaw

European (Tea)Cup - League D - Plzen & AkvaTera vs Nuremberg
.

A fairly disappointing pair of matches, with relatively little discussion taking place in one and zero discussion taking place in the other - with the latter also being by far the Cup match which saw the least number of votes. I'd be interested to hear if anyone can shed light on why people were reluctant to vote or discuss within that match!

League B - Budapest vs Wroclaw - TEMPERATE FOREST

Budapest - 23/55 points - 41.818%
Wroclaw - 32/55 points - 58.182%

League D - Plzen & AkvaTera vs Nuremberg - GRASSLANDS AND DESERTS

Plzen & AkvaTera - 48/105 points - 45.714%
Nuremberg - 57/105 points - 54.286%

Hopefully the next pair of matches will turn things around somewhat, dealing as they do with fairly high-profile zoological collections and interesting/engaging categories:

European (Tea)Cup - League A - Vienna vs Paris Zoo & Menagerie

European (Tea)Cup - League C - Cologne vs Burgers

As always, remember that even if the result seems obvious, every vote counts - in those matches with lower vote numbers overall, even a single vote skewing from the norm can have an overly-high impact on the final result!

A very enjoyable and satisfying pair of matches this time round - one of which (if my mental arithmetic and personal predictions about the course of coming matches bear true) may well prove one of the most significant of the Cup overall, and moreover demonstrate the accuracy of my prior statements that every vote counts.....

League A - Vienna vs Paris Zoo & Menagerie - PRIMATES

Vienna - 52/130 points - 40.000%
Paris - 78/130 points - 60.000%

League C - Cologne vs Burgers - ISLANDS

Cologne - 64/130 points - 49.231%
Burgers - 66/130 points - 50.769%

The next two matches look to be just as interesting.....

European (Tea)Cup - League B - Copenhagen vs Wroclaw

European (Tea)Cup - League D - Leipzig vs Nuremberg

...so hopefully I am not proven incorrect in my belief that these matches will engage your interests as much as the last pair!

Why does League D have two Grasslands and Deserts rounds?

Because I was excessively tired when I started the matches a few days ago :P clarification has been provided within the League D match thread, but for the record I shall reproduce it below!

I just checked my notes - this match *is* the one I originally assigned for the Grassland and Desert match, and the last match *should* have been the Tropical Forest match :p you'll recall I started the last League B and League D matches a little early because I was feeling tired and under the weather.... seems I was even more tired than I realised!

Hopefully no one will end up complaining if any given collection drops out of the competition as a direct result of my error, where it might otherwise have proceeded had the matches unfolded as originally-assigned :D

For anyone following along like I have, the remaining groups look to be...

LEAGUE A - Miscellaneous Mammals and Islands & Australia
LEAGUE B - Mountains & Poles and Grasslands & Deserts
LEAGUE C - Africa and Ectotherms
LEAGUE D - Water and Ectotherms (the only category with two left)

Although one match was a little quieter than I had hoped, and the other was somewhat impacted by an error on my part, they were nonetheless interesting and enjoyable overall:

League B - Copenhagen vs Wroclaw - WATER

Copenhagen - 35/105 points - 33.333%
Wroclaw - 70/105 points - 66.667%

League D - Leipzig vs Nuremberg - TROPICAL FOREST

Leipzig - 87/125 points - 69.600%
Nuremberg - 38/125 points - 30.400%

The next two matches have the potential to be very interesting and hotly-debated, I reckon....

European (Tea)Cup - League A - Chester vs Paris Zoo & Menagerie

European (Tea)Cup - League C - Zoo Berlin vs Cologne

I hope that you all enjoy participating in both matches :)

Final match-ups for Leagues A and C confirmed to be "Islands & Australia" and "Ectotherms", respectively.

With this in mind, League A is SO lucky that Chester has now had all its matches. XD

Two reasonably slow matches, but nonetheless pretty decisive and providing some important results which will have ongoing ramifications going forward.....

League A - Chester vs Paris Zoo & Menagerie - MISCELLANEOUS MAMMALS

Chester - 54/105 points - 51.429%
Paris - 51/105 points - 48.571%

League C - Zoo Berlin vs Cologne - AFRICA

Zoo Berlin - 64/105 points - 60.952%
Cologne - 41/105 points - 39.948%

The next pair of matches are underway, and I think they are pretty interesting ones to boot:

European (Tea)Cup - League B - Zagreb vs Antwerp & Planckendael

European (Tea)Cup - League D - Stuttgart vs Plzen & AkvaTera

We shall reconvene in three days :)

Two fairly quiet matches, but interesting nonetheless....

League B - Zagreb vs Antwerp & Planckendael - GRASSLAND AND DESERT

Zagreb - 25/95 points - 26.316%
Antwerp & Planckendael - 70/95 points - 73.684%

League D - Stuttgart vs Plzen - WATER

Stuttgart - 59/115 points - 51.304%
Plzen - 56/115 points - 48.696%

A pair of very interesting matches, with plenty of avenues for discussion, close out Leagues A and C next.....

European (Tea)Cup - League A - Zurich vs Artis

European (Tea)Cup - League C - Zoo Berlin vs Burgers

I hope that I am proven correct in my belief that these will be rather vibrant discussions!

The final matches for Leagues A and C were as interesting as I hoped:

League A - Zurich vs Artis - ISLANDS

Zurich - 86/110 points - 78.182%
Artis - 24/110 points - 21.818%

League C - Zoo Berlin vs Burgers - ECTOTHERMS

Zoo Berlin - 69/120 points - 57.500%
Burgers - 51/120 points - 42.500%

Hopefully the same will prove true of the final matches for Leagues B and D :)

European (Tea)Cup - League B - Zagreb vs Budapest

European (Tea)Cup - League D - Tierpark Berlin vs Pairi Daiza

After these matches end, we will have a few weeks to rest and recuperate before we get into the next rounds - partially to prevent people getting too burnt-out and losing interest in participating, but mostly because I will be travelling around Europe!

However, I do intend to produce a few summary posts over the weekend, and also hope to run a handful of fun stakes-free matches whenever time and inclination allows over the next few weeks, featuring some of the unlucky contenders from the initial brackets who deserve the chance to regain some pride and prove themselves!

A slightly more freeform summary post as I'm currently on a train between Cologne and Hannover (passing through Bielefeld at this very moment ...or am I? :p;)) and formatting posts on mobile with shaky internet signal is a pain:

A very quiet match, but one which ensured that Budapest left the Cup with at least one win:

Zagreb - 23/50 points - 46.000%
Budapest - 27/50 points - 54.000%

.

A quieter match than I'd hoped for, but it solidified the clean sweep of matches for Tierpark Berlin and the clean sweep of losses for Pairi Daiza:

Tierpark Berlin - 58/100 points - 58.000%
Pairi Daiza - 42/100 points - 42.000%
.

As previously noted, I intend to run a few bonus matches throughout my trip to keep enthusiasm for participation stoked whilst removing the stakes for anyone who has held back due to lack of immediate knowledge - but first I'll hopefully be posting a few summary posts tonight to give the general picture of how far we have come thus far :)

First things first - these are the final rankings at the end of the first round; all progression was determined by win count, and no "percentage score" tiebreaks ended up required. The collections progressing to the next round are marked in bold:

  1. Prague 5/5
  2. Tierpark Berlin 5/5
  3. Wroclaw 4/5
  4. Zoo Berlin 4/5
  5. Burgers 4/5
  6. Chester 4/5
  7. Vienna 4/5
  8. Stuttgart 4/5
  9. Antwerp 3/5
  10. Leipzig 3/5
  11. Paris 3/5
  12. Beauval 3/5
  13. Cologne 2/5
  14. ZSL 2/5
  15. Zurich 2/5
  16. Nuremberg 2/5
  17. Basel 1/5
  18. Plzen 1/5
  19. Budapest 1/5
  20. Artis 1/5
  21. Zagreb 1/5
  22. Copenhagen 1/5
  23. Pairi Daiza 0/5
  24. Frankfurt 0/5
In the fullness of time, the next round of formal matches will follow with League E (comprising the victors of A and C) and League F (comprising the victors of B and D).

There are, of course, distinct positives and negatives to determining progression this way - and I rather think that the following post (showing the rankings from the first round if determined by overall match score) will demonstrate the latter very well indeed!
