ZooChat v4 suggestions

IF I use the tags I often have the "alternative" or old names for the species there. For example, if I would upload a photo of a Silver-beaked tanager (Ramphocelus carbo), I potentially would then tag the photo with Maroon tanager, Silver-billed tanager, and Lanius carbo - synonyms/alternative names for that species. While keeping one of the most recent/"correct" names in the title.

And sometimes I also add the species name in some other languages, like for example German and French.

Is it possible to make a must-read subforum with a short list of threads which come again and again, so that new members can be guided there?

Examples of such threads would be:
- a list of zoo animals in Europe and where to check if a species X is in zoos in a given region
- origin of wild animals in zoos
- population management in zoos
- how dolphinaria justify that cetaceans are kept in high welfare?
- general welfare of zoo animals, why zoo animals mostly don't understand or suffer from lack of 'freedom'.
- general welfare and breeding of elephants in zoos in particular
- list of studbooks and breeding plans
- list of zoo-related journals and publications
- history of high profile species in zoos: eastern gorillas, sumatran, javan and northern white rhinos, giant pandas, rarer cetaceans etc.

For some older members, seeing questions answered long ago asked again and again is demotivating and puts people off the forum. How many times one can explain that a new 'wild founder' mammal is usually rescued or confiscated, not caught especially for display?

Isn't this already sort of a thing with pinned threads in specific boards? It could be expanded on though, maybe having winners of "thread of the year" being pinned or a thread for users to request certain threads get pinned (if enough users agree with the request that is)?

Maybe, but more pinned threads are needed. People keep started discussions about essentially the same topics!

Apologies if it has come up before, but on a theme park forum I occasionally look at, there’s a section for park maps. You can view each individual park, and select the map by year/season, and it’s useful when looking to see historical developments in parks. Obviously it would be difficult to find maps for every year at every park, so there would be gaps.

I am not that well clued up on plagiarism laws so not sure if there are legal issues with that, but I know plenty of park map photos are already on ZC so hoping that’s not too much of an issue!

That kind of thing would be one advantage of a wiki.

So with the tagging, I know we already have a tagging system but maybe there's a way that we can have a thing where everyone helps out and tags as many pictures as possible?

I can help with the WCS zoos.

It would be useful to be able to see the photos with the most comments in a particular gallery, just so what the biggest discussion about a particular zoo in the gallery have been.

That's existed ever since I've been on this site, probably since the very beginning.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, just use the toggle on the right to sort photos in any particular gallery.Screen Shot 2023-10-22 at 9.38.04 PM.png

I didn't know about the feature until recently and now I use it any time I'm browsing a new gallery for the first time or researching the zoo. :)

As a slight variation to this idea, how about a "favorite" or "super like" or "love" or "bookmark" posts feature, where you can view your favorite ZooChat posts of all time in personal settings.
In personal settings, I want to see a "Posts You Like" button so you can view all other members' posts that you have liked.

I had no idea you could do this! You'd think I would figured that out already by this time. Thanks!
I didn't, either, so glad you asked! Thanks @pachyderm pro!

What I'm gathering here is that maybe the "Sort by..." toggle should be made a little more prominent. :p

I think it would be helpful if there was a way to sort the galleries so that images with the most recent comments appear at the top. I know that there is already a way to see the 5 most recent media comments at the bottom of the media page, but it would be helpful if that feature was expanded to show more than 5 comments / to able to see the most recent comments for particular zoo galleries.
