Fun! Took a bit of digging around to find the answer; found various snippets of his life, do you know if there is a biography or overall account of his life? I’m not going to give the answer (yet) for two reasons; to give others a chance, and the fact that I haven’t got a question to set yet!

That’s what I had found, as well as his involvement in the killing of Chunee, the Elephant of Exeter Chase, and the use of his rockery to display birds of prey in a rival menagerie. He also named genera for the Cheetah and the Sumatran Rhino, and is commemorated in the name Brookesia for dwarf chameleons. Great question!

You're both right. I must admit that I thought it was Dr Brookes, but I have also found the name to be spelt Dr Brooks.

This puts me in a difficult position. As Tim May answered it first, I'll let Tim ask the next question.

I hope you're OK with that, Tetzoo Quizzer. Thanks for your kind comments

Pygmy Hippopotamus
Indeed the first living pygmy hippoptamus to reach Europe.

Sadly it didn't survive long; it died of pneumonia shortly after its arrival and there was then a wait of nearly forty years before Hagenbeck imported five specimens in 1912.

The original Dublin animal can still be seen mounted in Dublin University's Zoology Museum.
