Karlsruhe doesn't have new elephants. Jenny lives there since november 2009 and Nanda came in june 2016. There is no integration.Both are consequently kept away from each other. I hope one day Jenny can come together with her good friend Bala who lives in Liberec.

I really hope that one day Bala moves to Karlsruhe to meet Jenny. Rani is already 57 years old and once she dies, Bala cannot be left alone in their terrible conditions.
It is also possible that Nanda has some health problems and therefore does not want to accept any more elephants. She is from a circus and is almost blind, so they do not want to cause her stress yet. But that's just my consideration.

The Zoo announced last week that they will install the procted contact system now at their elephant enclosure. The longtime head keeper has left the zoo recently:

2 intresting birds hatched at Karlsruhe :
Sarus crane ( bred regulary at Karlsruhe )
Hyacinth macaw ( first-breeding(?) for the zoo, the male chick being hand-raised )

2 Lesser flamingos have hatched this week ( still a quite rare event in European zoos ).

After these 2 chichs 8 more Lesser flamingos hatched in the colony and all 10 were raised succesfull.
2 eggs laid after the main colony had already stopped breeding were placed in the incubator. Also thes hatched both and are now being hand-raised.

Forstenlories are very rarely kept in public ( and private ) collections and Karlsruhe started with the species 2015. In 2020 the first breeding-results were archieved and also this year 2 chicks have hatched .

2 pairs of the Citron-crested cockatoos have each hatched 1 chick in the breeding-station behind the scenes .

New species at Karlsruhe : around 80 captive-bred Mayotte mantela frogs ( Blommersia transmaria ) - a species only discribed scientificly in 2019 ! - has been released into the "Exoten-haus" to reduce the free-roaming insects in this building .

Zoo Karlsruhe recently received two animals that are new in European zoos and for which no former holdings are known in Zootierliste either.

From Tuebingen University came 20 lesser long-nosed bats (Glossophaga yerbabuenae) which were released in the tropical house.

From a breeding centre in Ecuador came 30 captive bred Rio Pescado stubfoot toads (Atelopus badios), a critically endangered amphibian. This is the first time this species is displayed in any zoo, but the plan is to roll out an European breeding program for this species. The toads are on show in Karlsruhe too.

It has not been mentioned here yet, but a new species for the zoo is the black-and-rufous sengi. A male came from Leipzig and a female arrived from München.

A great addition to karslruhe Tierpark (institution part of Karslruhe Zoo), a pair of Philippine spotted deer, they are going to live in the former bactrian camells enclosure

The access to the Polar Bear enclosures has been closed to the public, but the survival of the cubs isn't guaranteed.
