The young male Caribbean Manatee SEKOE has just been transferred to Duisburg Zoo in Germany.
Zoo Duisburg on Instagram: "Wir begrüßen eine neue Seekuh Das 4-jährige Männchen ist im französischen Zoo Beauval geboren worden. Den Weg an den Kaiserberg hat das Schwergewicht gut überstanden und ist ab sofort zu sehen. Der Transport: Eine logistische Herausforderung. Intensiv bereitete sich das Zoo-Team in den letzten Wochen auf den Transport vor, nun ist ein schwergewichtiger Neuankömmling wohlbehalten in Duisburg angekommen: ‚Sekoe‘ ist eine Rundschwanz-Seekuh und trifft am Kaiserberg auf zwei Artgenossen. Manfred (6) und Pablo (4) leben bereits seit Sommer 2022 im weitläufigen Wasserareal der Tropenhalle Rio Negro. Somit wächst die Junggesellen-Gruppe der Rundschwanz-Seekühe auf drei Tiere an. The Tapir calf is a girl, and she has received the name of JAYA.

Il évoque la victoire et la positivité en indonésien. Jaya se porte très bien et est chouchoutée par sa maman, Utari. Vous pouvez l’observer dans sa maison intérieure. Ouvrez l’œil, elle est vraiment minuscule par rapport à sa maman ! Et beaucoup trop chou ! Le saviez-vous ? Otherwise there's new signage in front of the twin Puma enclosures (these new signage panels are very good !), as reported on Howtank forum/chat.
 
Bird news in Beauval, reported on Howtank forum/chat :
  • Marabou Storks have joined the Vulture aviary near the Northern entrance and the Dome (that was once designed for the Red-shanked Doucs...) ;
  • the Blue-bellied Roller is back in the bird show "Les Maîtres des Airs".

The South American Coatis have finally been removed from the South American aviary and placed off-show, because they began to be aggressive against waterfowl and other birds.
It's unclear if, when and where they will be back on show.

Beauval has confirmed the transfer of the Coatis to a new enclosure of the zoo in the near future.

Dernièrement, Baya avait rendez-vous avec un dentiste pour un contrôle de santé. Bilan : une dent a été enlevée car elle avait une carie mais l’intervention s’est bien passée. On en profite aussi pour vous donner des nouvelles du groupe des 13 coatis. Tout va bien pour eux. Ils sont, en ce moment en coulisse, non-visibles du public mais ils devraient l’être à nouveau prochainement. En effet, même si le groupe s'était très bien acclimaté dans la Grande Volière Sud-Américaine, qu’il partageait avec les atèles de Colombie, les soigneurs ont été témoins d’un changement de comportement... Les coatis ont développé un instinct de chasse envers les oiseaux qui venaient se poser près de leur point d’eau. Afin de préserver les oiseaux, il a donc été décider de réfléchir à un nouvel espace de vie. On vous donne de leurs nouvelles bientôt. Arrival of 1.1 Golden Takins called HAO and DAYE, it's a new species for the zoo. They are still off-show.
Otherwise there has been many recent births : 8 Red-crested Pochards, 1 Red-legged Seriema, 6 Cattle Egrets, 10 Black-crowned Night Herons, 2 Rainbow Lorikeets, 1 Ring-tailed Lemur, 3 Common Dwarf Mongooses, 1 Kirk's Dik-dik, 1 Bongo.

Sorry. I've heard yesterday that only 2 female Mishmi Takin remained in Beauval.
At my last visit in April there was still the "normal-sized" group (at least 3-4 animals, without more precision).

Mmmm, I think the loss of diversity in the various Himalayan takin subspecies is a very deplorable one.

The Mishmi Takin herd of Beauval bred well. It's understandable that the EEP coordinator (or Beauval direction itself?) pauses the breeding of this species to avoid overrepresentation of the lineage, in favour of another (rarer) species.

All takin species are currently scored as VULNERABLE according to IUCN Red List. However, that assessment was down to 2008 and in the 16 years since a lot has happened and even at the time the estimates were at times even best guesses bedfordi (Shaanxi: less than 6,000, more realistic than the 21,000+ cited) and the tibetana (at best several 1,000's...) or even totally unknown given a lack of monitoring and data (both the nominate taxicolor (Mishmi) from Myanmar and the whitei from Bhutan.

I would thus hope EAZA and the EEP for Takins would wise up and try and conserve at least 2 subspecies of Takin within Europe in ex situ programs. Much I like that AZA in North America do the same ensuring at least 3/4 subspecies have robust ex situ populations outside P.R. China or the Himalayan and Tibetan plateau and west-central mountains regions of P.R. China.

The EEP populations of the Mishmi takin (B. t. taxicolor) and the Golden takin (B. t. bedfordi) will both be managed towards insurance populations. The population of Sichuan takin (B. t. tibetana) will be phased out in EAZA to make space for the other subspecies.
