Zoos Victoria have announced that the mainland population of Eastern Barred Bandicoots have had a conservation status change from 'Extinct in the Wild' to 'Endangered' reflecting the secure populations of these bandicoots within protected areas. Consequently, Zoos Victoria are ending the 30-year breeding programme for the barred bandicoots due to the established populations at island and fenced sites.

Perhaps they could hand some over to a few native wildlife parks as a captive back up?

I don't know why you'd end the program here, the species is still Endangered, a backup captive population seems like a good idea.
Indeed a nay nay brainer. It is only transfer up to Endangered and as yet in one of the highest threat categories actually making a mockery of conservation action and far away from safe sustainable populations. Now it would make sense if the populations had recovered beyond to Vulnerable which they have not.
