ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2014

If so, it will be good to have the species back in the UK subsequent to nearly a century of absence

Wasn't there one in the ZSL Aquarium more recently- unless my memory is wrong here, I seem to remember seeing one there circa 1960's or 80's era.- not sure which species though.

Interesting - certainly this is not recorded on ZTL, although holdings of Hellbender at an unspecified date and Japanese Giant in the 19th century are.

There was a Japanese giant salamander in the London Zoo Aquarium for many years; I believe it died in 1989.

Not sure if this has already been posted or not but it was very welcome news to me - I'm at the zoo now and there's at least one Panay Cloud Rat back onshow in the Clore.

(with thanks to the keeper who popped some new food in at just the right time to bring it into view!)

Fantastic news :D did you get any photographs?

Which enclosure are they in?

It might well have been longer than that; no Aquarium keeper could have been blamed for uncertainty. It was possibly the only animal in the collection at the time to make "Chia Chia" the Giant Panda seem hyperactive by comparison.

None of the animal but I've got a snap of the sign as corroboration. :D

It is/they are in the third mammal enclosure in the nocturnal section - the first on the end wall - so the first room goes Brown Rat, Malagasy Jumping Rat, Panay Cloud Rat, Jumping Rat/Moholi Galago (the angle-fronted full-height enclosure), Moholi Galago, Australian Water Rat with Naked Mole Rat opposite.

Ah, same enclosure as they used to be in then :)

I've certainly seen them in the big middle enclosure in the past - I think then they had the same arrangements as the galagos do now, with access to the middle and right enclosures.

No, the Japanese giant salamander definitely died in 1989; since typing my earlier comment I have checked the relevant ZSL Annual Report and this confirmed that date.

I think Ian is implying the animal was so inactive it might have been dead in the enclosure for some time before being noticed ;)

Cloud rat signage for TLD! :p

It's supposed to arrive some time in December: I'll keep an eye open and let you know. I was quite surprised to see how relatively modest the enclosure is, but if the beast is as idle as you describe, it won't need much running-around space!

The lemurs appeared to have left the roundhouse - maybe they are in the offshow area bring integrated with the recent transfers from Whipsnade

Francois’ langurs baby Zhen now at Belfast Zoo

Belfast Zoo. A special Christmas delivery!

Went to London today for the first time in nearly 10 years, was really impressed by the newer bits, tiger territory was massive, seems a bit excessive for two tigers (I'm assuming the cubs will go at some point seeing as they're pretty much full grown).
Penguin beach was lovely, loads of opportunities to see them swim, and some of them got very close to the glass.
Got a close encounter with Tammy the Tamandua when she decided to come for a walkabout among the visitors, very pretty lady.
I don't remember the aquarium being that good when I went before but enjoyed it so much I had to go a second time.
The lion bit is all boarded off, which I think is new, no real clues around the place about what it'll look like when it's done, which was a missed opportunity.
I'll stick a few pics up if I can get them on here from my phone.

Was just reminded, it was a bit of a shame to see the old penguin pool empty, though clearly not suitable for penguins anymore, I do wonder if it could be repurposed for something else, flamingos perhaps?
