ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2015

The zoo will soon receive a new breeding group of African hunting dog from Port Lympne.

Is there are date for new arrivals, I know that Port Lympne has a successful breeding programme, about 40 hunting dogs in various packs. Any idea what will happen to the 2 females at London Zoo, will they stay or be moved to another zoo

They're going the other way.

I must say I'm suprised ZSL are perseveering with this species at London, the enclosure's pretty small for starters. Have they ever bred?

The enclosure would be large enough for 6/8 hunting dogs, it is a fair size enclosure. I am not sure if the 2 females have ever had pups, the male at the zoo died, suspected heart problems. The 2 females have been on their own for some time

London Zoo has received 2 males and 1 female, the 2 females that were at the zoo have gone to Port Lympne.
The female okapi which arrived at London Zoo recently has settled in well and has been outside in the paddock

Anyone know the current situation with the tiger cubs? Have they moved on yet?

One of the males is due to go to Welsh Mountain - no date publicly given.

Someone mentioned a while ago now that Cinta is going to Prague but again no dates on record

Nothing definite or concrete either way, but...

Manor House have said they're getting a male from London to join a female from a French zoo this summer.

And as Nisha said, Welsh Mountain and Prague have long been rumoured as the other destinations
In the European Sumatran Tiger thread on here, there's an article about one of the males going to Welsh Mountain.

All 3 cubs are still at London Zoo, as far as I know there is no definite date for the cubs to be moved to other zoos, I would think that sometime in September would be likely.

Saw on the news this morning that a baby sloth has been born and is being hand reared by keepers. Thought they said London but was a little surprised as Marilyn seems to be a good mum to her last youngster. Was this a surprise birth like last year?

For some reason or other Marilyn stop producing milk and therefore the new baby has to be fed by devoted keepers. Her first baby, in my opinion, did stay with Mum for a long time and I think at one stage, Marilyn was carrying two babies around. Her first born has now left London Zoo and is in a zoo in France. Let's hope with the TLC given to "Edward" he becomes a fully grown sloth

Thank you for the information Regent! Do you know when the first youngster left the Zoo and where they went to in France at all?

Can't give you an exact date, however, I would suggest 6 - 8 weeks ago when the transfer took place. I am sorry but I can't give you the new location, the keeper and volunteers that I spoke to just said " a zoo in France". It maybe that another subscriber to Zoo Chat could provide more definite information.

Many thanks again Regent :) Maybe someone else will know where they have gone.

There's a really nice video on LZ's facebook page of the baby sloth being hand reared. Worth a look.

I was very fortunate that when attending one of the Sunset Safari sessions, I caught a glimpse of the baby sloth with Mum before the ZSL staff had to take the baby away since he was not getting enough milk. I hope that the sloth makes good progress and will be seen by visitors to the Rain Forest

I have a couple of questions from my visit today and I'm hoping someone can answer them:

What happened to the Brolga in the Snowden aviary? I saw one when I visited last December but today there was a Red-crowned Crane in there.

Also, when did the Panay Bushy-tailed Cloud Rats go on show? They've always been off show on my visits.

The cloud rats have been onshow since June, when the big reshuffle in Night Life happened.

As for the Brolga, he was on his own for a very long time. I'm not entirely sure if he died or was sent to a different collection (possibly to Whipsnade), but at Whipsnade they had quite a few red-crowned cranes so I assume this one came from there; not entirely sure if that's the case though.

I believe there is now be an Aye-Aye on show although I didn't spot it in its enclosure today
