ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2015

Kinkajous are in the old elephant house, though you have a very small chance of seeing them as they're always hidden away fast asleep.

Is the Casson only open on certain days/times? Whenever I'm there it always seems to be closed

The entrance near the donkeys is the one that's open.

Just go right up to the automatic door and it will open, I go in every time I'm there.

I think that sometimes the house is closed, usually just before the Animal in Action display takes place. I believe that some of the animals used in the display are housed in the Casson area

It's worth going into the Casson because often it's your only chance of seeing the tapirs – they prefer being inside. I have never seen the kinkajou in there as she's always asleep out of view.

You don't mention the aye-aye who is worth seeking out – when you approach the glass of her enclosure (at the end of the ring-tailed lemurs' indoor area) you need to look to your left where there is a slightly separate section at right angles. She is often visible in there and the keepers put food on the ledge behind the glass so she is sometimes very close.

does anyone want to play a guessing game of a new species coming to London Zoo this year? It's kind of like that "I know something you don't know" except in this case I'll actually tell you the answer after a few people have had some guesses :p

Clue: no other zoo in England has this species.

I will play.
I think it is maybe an australasian species, (because you know it when others more local seemingly don't)
(Unless it is the Francois' Langurs, but that is known).
I think due to your use of 'England' it may be present elsewhere in the UK.
London maybe want to add another crowd pleaser.
I'm going to guess Koalas :)

Thanks for the Casson info everyone, will try that door on my next visit. Haven't seen the tapirs in ages!

Well, if it is this year then an exhibit space must already exist or only need minimal work to make it suitable. Maybe some kind of bird? Although I'll also second FunkyGibbon, Koalas would be great too!

If it's something held elsewhere in the UK, possibly Tree Kangaroo?
If Nowhere in England also meant the rest of the UK, how about kiwi.
Can't think of a ready made exhibit for koala or tree kangaroo.

Quick question from someone who's only visited once, last summer, I assume the Zoo is less busy during winter, but is it ever actually quiet?

Brown hyenas? If the hunting dogs were to move to Whipsnade?

Or on 2nd thoughts, PANGOLINS? Bearing in mind their big campaign about them?

Winter is generally much quieter in general, much prefer it to the busy crowds of summer. First thing after opening on a winter Sunday can be lovely and quiet.

A new species - perhaps from the Antipodes - mouthwatering :D
But very unlikely to be something that hasn't been seen at ZSL before.

Tasmanian devils? Wombats? Fairy wrens? Fig parrots? Kaka? Kagu? Perentie? Naultinus? I think I'm getting carried away :)

Imagine putting Tree Kangaroo in the Snowden..... or doing a Zoo Berlin and putting Kiwi in every single enclosure in the Blackburn Pavilion..... or having Kagu in the rainforest portion of the Clore..... :p

I'm 98% sure I know what the species in question is, but reading all the guesswork is much more fun than spoiling the game!

OK one more completely wild guess :D ...is Sirocco Kakapo coming on a UK visit?!

If that happened I'd be down in London faster than you could say Strigops habroptilus :p never happening though!

I know, but a girl can dream can't she?

If it's something held elsewhere in the UK then I think koala or tree kangaroo. Can't think of anything else unless they feel like replacing the brolga! :)
