ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2016

Apparently the male and female aye-ayes have been put in together now, though I haven't seen them. And there are now three narrow-striped mongooses: a (hopefully) breeding pair in the first section of enclosures on the left of the rainforest, and a single separate female in the further section – she is the easiest to see as the other two have an off-show area.

I could only see one aye-aye today, but he/she had access to an external area so the mate could have been through there.

Saw two narrow-striped mongooses, one in each section - so I guess one from the first enclosure was off-show.

I believe the new EU invasive species laws include Sacred Ibis, and the aviary would certainly be extremely bare without them if nothing else was added!
(assuming the UK stays in the EU of course)

So hopefully this money will turn things around ( as long as they spend it wisely!?)

The impression I get is that the money is to enable the zoo to plan any changes they might want to undertake - but the cost of actually undertaking those changes would be separate. Certainly, the £301,000 quoted wouldn't go very far in London....

that's how I read it. The £301,000 is for the planning stage, then "an application for a full grant of £4.8m will be made following the outcome of the initial development stage."

As great as it would be to see the Snowdon re-developed, I fear it will just end up showing up the whole north bank in all it's shabbyness!!
Fingers crossed they'll re-develope the whole section!!

When Do you think the Snowdon Aviary Development will start developing and has London zoo started Planning it (What will be in the Aviary or if it will not be a Aviary any more?), i Hope they will have something different In There, Not Just Birds.

Also Hopefully they will do up the Owl enclosures at the back of the zoo, Maybe Destroy the cages or extend the Snowdon on to them and have a Walk-though in the cages and When the public can go in, there could be different types of New Species in them on each sides to the Walk-though.

I also think they should extend to the zoo at Back or even the front (Regents Park) Where the camels are or where the owl cages because i think there is a Field/ hill at the back and they could ask the Extend the zoo onto Regents park because it is massive and there is lots of space to add new enclosures and also because the zoo is getting crowded now unless they add a New Exhibit at the Middle of the zoo where the Restaurant and the shop and where the pelicans are.

Also if the Snowdon Aviary development goes well then the zoo could Do up the Mappin Terraces, it would be cool to get to go down onto the Mappin Terraces and Look at the Animals, they could even Add a New Exhibit at the main entrance to the zoo and exhibit the Emus and the Kangaroos from the Mappins and use the Mappins for a New Experience like A New House for Bears Or Have a House where they hold Arctic Animals like Polar Bears, Penguins, Arctic Foxes, Wolves ect and inside it is cold and covered in ice and before you go in their are desert Animals like the Camels and Fennic Foxes and tortoises out on the Paddock.
And this could leave Space for New Animals in Penguin Beach and the Camel Exhibit

Visited on Monday afternoon for only the second time since 1980s.

My main ambition was to see Zaire who I photographed in my 1980s visit. Was just about to leave the gorillas when a nice keeper not only pointed out Zaire but told me to wait because she was just going to feed her on the Island. Mission accomplished.

I don't know if this is a regular occurance but for the hour and half I was watching them Effie seemed to be doing quite a lot of caring for Alika, Mjukuu had both babies when they went out on the island for a feed and when I went back at closing time but every other time I went in Effie seemd to be on duty.

So you'll gather I didn't see much else - the tigers were put together again and a visitor had seen them mating.

I saw LotL but no lions, I left it quite late as that's when our YWP lions get active and another visitor told me earlier he'd been round and not seen them. The langurs are good though.

I do like the Rainforest life exhibit, stood still for a while and suddenly was surrounded by monkeys. Tamandua was unfortunately asleep in a tree.

I was under the impression Mjukuu had taken them both over fulltime- from what you say that seems not to be the case. I wonder if Effie actually still feeds her son (or either of them) though. I can't quite figure out how this sharing breaks down or what is going on here...

Alika was being constantly active and Effie was keeping an eye on her, playing with her, retrieving her, she never picked her up and held her or carried her but at that time Mjukuu was either asleep up top (really hard to see who it was although probably Zaire) or in the offshow area with Gernot. Never saw Effie near Gernot.

Thanks for the description, from which it sounds as if Effie is playing the 'aunt' to the more older and active Alika, and that Mjukuu has completely adopted Gernot. Effie's mothering skills were questionable before, as she had problems feeding her other babies which were both handreared, and it seems she has proved lax this time also. But at least Gernot has been able to stay in the group(so far anyway ).

The rainforest has been spruced up a bit so the rainforest floor looks like it's had some replanting and a bit of an overhaul. All 3 tamanduas were out when I last visited.

Some work seems to be going on inside Gorilla teritory but the Gorillas were on show (the main viewing window was still available) and were were outside for a while. Youngest baby is now climbing on the grill (thin enough for him to be able to grip) by where the keepers pass food and drinks to the gorilla.

Signage suggests that the Okapi have been introduced to each other and although they were in separate areas when I visited they seem to be communicating through the fence. No sign of anything else sharing their enclosure.

Some penguin chicks 5 I saw , were in the Penguins nursery area. Looks like they have several other boxes ready if necessary.

Currently the tigers are together and were getting a small feed at the two presentations so worth attending.

Lions can be a bit elusive worth passing through a couple of times. As they are still at the settling in/introductions stage there isn't an obvious set routine to their day.

Did you get a look at Bhanu? He's still eluding me...

Was there on Saturday and saw a male duiker mixed in with the male okapi! They do exist!

Yes, saw him today! Also noticed the Quarantine sign on the rear door to the Okapi House had been removed.

The baby tamandua is now nearly full-grown, hard to tell apart from the adults.

The first two enclosures on the right after the Lemur walkthrough which used to hold Lac Alaotra Gentle Lemurs now has a pair of Golden Headed Lion Tamarins

Finally saw a Panay Cloud Rat again, that's an average now of about once every six months since they went on-show

There is a nice new timeline exhibit for the 90th birthdays of Sir David Attenborough and The Queen in the East Tunnel, looking at how they have been involved with the ZSL, illustrated with a nice selection of photographs

I believe the pair of golden headed lion tamarins are the mother and daughter (bandit) that used to have free reign in the rainforest . There is new baby mangabey probably about a week old (adjacent to the gorilla territory ). Edward the young sloth is on show albeit mostly well hidden in the far left rainforest enclosure (the enclosure where Prince and Geoff were ocasionally kept in the past).
Looks like some hireable storage lockers have been placed near the Aquarium kiosk.
Oh and some illuminateable animals have appeared presumably to light up Zoo lates.
