ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2017

I don't think she has fed Gernot since the very earliest days. Her breasts look inactive in all the photos I've seen. Maybe she carries him sometimes but Mjuku seems to be his primary carer. I guess Gernot isn't mentioned as he's not old enough to feature on the diet sheets yet.

You are correct, the two share Gernot now. Effie often carries him around and plays with him, as well as shares a nest with him at night. But at feeding times and a lot of the time when it comes to carrying it is Mjukuu who is responsible for him.

In other news, the zoo now has four species of turaco; Hartlaub's in the aviaries outside the Blackburn, Fischer's in the African Bird Safari, red-crested in the walkthrough inside the Blackburn and, as spotted by myself whilst passing by in the zoo yesterday, at least one violet turaco in the walkthrough in Gorilla Kingdom.

Its a form of infant sharing I haven't really seen before. I think maybe Effie's problem is still with feeding, the reason she rejected her previous two babies I believe and maybe why she allowed Mjuku to adopt him. Seems Effie still has a bond with her baby despite not feeding it and perhaps its even increased from early on.

The female hunting dogs appear to have now left for Whipsnade.
Pelicans are now back out ( only saw 4 rather than the original 5).

I didn't check inside the Blackburn Pavilion or the Snowden Aviary but the walkthrus in Bird Safari (opposite Gorilla Kingdom) and the small aviary at the entrance to Gorilla Kingdom were both open this afternoon.

at this morning's bird display at Whipsnade it was announced that the blue-throated macaws currently at London will be heading to Bolivia in the next year to be part of a breed-and-release programme

Any info on the birds in question? Are they captive bred or former wild caught ones?

Somewhat surprising …: I always thought the blue throated macaw in Europe and US zoos were striving to have young captive-bred birds up for release back to the in situ species in crisis.

Couldn't say where they came from, but I know that they have a bachelor group of four, and two pairs, so 6.2 total

They mentioned 4 pairs if I remember right, but if they only have 2 pairs I must have got my numbers wrong :P

Technically they're not wrong as there are eight total, but since the 2017 inventory says it's 6.2 and the actual birds are kept in two separate pairs and a group of four I would be inclined to think the group is all boys :)
