ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2022

There was still an anoa at London Zoo in 2013 so, unluckily, you only just missed seeing the species there in 2014.

Oh no, so close!

Another quick update from today's visit:
  • Loki is out and about and enjoying himself - he is being kept together with his mother and father, thought Asim appears to be largely ignoring him. He's quite energetic until he burns himself out towards the end of the day :P
  • Squirrel monkeys are in the Spectacled owl aviary for now.
  • The Safari aviary is closed for now due to Avian flu but the other walkthrough aviaries remain open afaik.
  • Okapis and the elusive duiker was out and about!
  • A lot of people there to see the cub, including several professional photographers - windows around the cub crammed all the way until closure.
  • Saw Titicaca frogs in the amphibian room, along with Mallorcan, Iberian and Common midwife toads.

Loki and Mum were in the old pool paddock area today, enjoying playing. The tiger territory area was packed out this afternoon.
The 3 squirrel monkeys are all females who are now living in the former spectacled owl aviary. I think there are now only 12 squirrel monkeys in the main area.
Work has started to demolish the animal adventure area so that the new reptile house can be built.

Think you mean the amphitheatre, right?
If you were at the zoo today, quite possible we ran into each other at some point :p!

Does anyone know how soon the new reptile house will begin construction? Apologies if this has already been answered, I'm just wondering.

Today (Friday 11Feb) construction workers were starting to demolish the amphitheatre. The suggested proposed date for the new reptile house was sometime in 2022. As far as I’m aware the zoo has not announced an actual month

Yesterday the ZSL announced that Whipsnade Zoo would be closed on Friday 18th February because of Storm Eunice. This afternoon the decision was announced that London Zoo would also be closed tomorrow.

An extract from a recent e-mail to ZSL Fellows:

Based on the latest Storm Eunice weather reports, we have made the decision to close London Zoo on Friday 18 February as well. The safety of our animals, staff and visitors is our number one priority.

I was thinking of going to London Zoo on Friday but did have 1 eye on weather forecast. Zoo has made the right decision for everyone. Looking at other zoos it seems that many of them have decided not to open on Friday

Email from ZSL this evening on an issue with Loki the tiger cub

London Zoo tiger cub has emergency hospital visit
We wanted to update you on some news about Loki, ZSL London Zoo's two-month-old tiger cub who was rushed to London Zoo’s animal hospital today, when zookeepers saw the young cat having a seizure.

Monitoring the cub via remote CCTV, the zookeepers called vets as soon as they realised something was wrong. The zoo’s veterinary team were on the scene in minutes and able to get Loki straight to the hospital.

Once at the hospital, Loki was given medication to stop the seizure, which allowed vets to carefully examine him. X-rays, radiographs and blood tests were carried out to look for any obvious signs of illness or infection. The cub had also shown no recent signs of being unwell - in fact, just hours before, he’d been observed playing happily with his parents in Tiger Territory.

This doesn’t sound good no matter how much the ZSL press office sugar-coat it.:(

What is it with ZSL and bad news stories at the beginning of every new year in recent years?!?!?

Yes doesn’t sound too good at all. Good to see how quickly they were on top of it but a worrying time for the keepers etc I imagine - it’s always worse when a root cause isn’t known. Maybe the blood tests will turn something up.

I really hope we can get off this bad news streak!!

However this turns out, they do seem cursed with bad luck with high profile species- I'm thinking Tigers and Gorillas in particular.

To be fair, the last few gorillas have died across multiple seasons. Though it’s kind of a moot point, since they’ve got through more than a few of them.

2022 Inventory list on ZSL website. Few things I noticed, no male Gaur at Whipsnade, few new bird species at London, Pink Pidgeon, Javan Green Magpie, Collared trogons, only 1 male Philippines Crocodile, lots of single sex birds - must be having trouble obtaining replacements from Europe hence all birds sourced from UK like other Zoos like Jersey have from Chester, only 3 Crested Macaques at London - maybe obtaining new animals for the move to Beds... Pair of African Fish Eagles and a Hooded Vulture at Whipsnade.
