ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2022

More bad news from ZSL, at best this cub will end up having to be hand raised due to being away from the mother too long, but I think we are being prepared for the worst. I hope I'm wrong
Me too.. I want to be wrong but if blood test are inconclusive so any common infection has been ruled out.. seizure are very dangerous and potentially untreatable in a animal so young, :(

Gaysha has had a couple problem litters in the past, we can only hope he gets through this rough patch. And should he need hand rearing then at least it poses less problems than with lions ( in reference to AF’s Azi)

If the cub does survive to adulthood, I assume no breeding programme will touch him? The genetic risks would be too high surely?

Not strictly true , the breeding programmes aren’t a strictly regulated as they like to make out they are these days. Number of issues have arisen with this pairing already ( made a very bah-hum-bug post about it in December ). I’ve also noticed that some breeding programmes are making very odd pairings such as 16 year old females to essentially juvenile males

What do we know about Gasha and Asim previous litters.. as I was surprised hey were allowed to breed again. Since they have in the past

I’ll just refer you to the last few posts of the 2021 thread as i’m sure if i repeat myself someone will get snappy. In short they have had 5 litters with fatalities incurring in all of them including but not limited to still borns / failure to thrive.

Yes it’s a shame they haven’t found a cause and feline seizures are pretty unusual though epilepsy can be treated if it did turn out to be that.

In a little cub though it’s clearly a dangerous time.

At least he’s still with his mother at the moment as it’s also stressful for her to have him keep disappearing I’d imagine.

Hoping for the best.

My assumption would be he’d remain a non breeding member of the programme. If it was deemed necessary to breed from this line, Asim and Gaysha have non affected relatives that could be used.

The Australasian region has been plagued by Congenital Vestibular Disease (CVD) which is usual non fatal in captivity but causes head tilt, circling, ataxia, strabismus and nystagmus. As a result, affected tigers have not been bred from; while their non affected siblings have been.

Does make me wonder what they can do if they can’t find the cause of Loki illness? As it’s so strange how everything is inconclusive!!
Was At London zoo today… good day great to see animals but also some seem very lonesome.. like the 2 giraffe could do with more land and grass to explore not just concrete!
Zebra look good but again not natural habitat..
Hunting dogs we was so excited to see but such a small space for a wolf like animal..
Two lions fast asleep such a big enclosure but I wonder how much is the exhibit space is used!

Just the 2 hybrid giraffe left?

Yes that’s all that was visible and 3 zebras and couldn’t see the okapi! I do wonder what the future of London zoo will be when these animals cease .. like the gorilla mother daughter and mother son.. don’t they need a male soon? Giraffe future? Hunting dogs future?
TBH: I think ZSL must focus on an concentrate on the neat and extraordinary animals in the animal kingdom. More diversity in terms of smaller species and orders (decent bird, reptile, amphibian, fish and invert collection) with several larger signature species (gorilla, tiger, giraffe, smaller primates (after the Celebes cresteds move to WH and colobus to the Snowdon.

Bulldoze the 2 concrete slab eyesores in the middle of the zoo. Architectural heritage, but animal welfare disasters now, For goodness sake it is a zoo.

I would favour bachelor male giraffe herd going forward, fix up the gorilla family and with silverback, a spruced up Madagascar area with mammals, birds, reptiles, a West African primate focus near gorilla (mangabey, Diana monkey), next to gibbons another langur species silvered leaf f.i.

I do completely agree they are poor animal environments but the rules on listed buildings are really strict here (London zoo has 13 listed buildings at grade 1 and 2) so not easy to get permission to just push them over, it's why there are buildings ZSL struggles to know what to do with (the old elephant house at Whipsnade for example).

The hunting dog exhibit is bigger than you must have thought, it extends quite far along the bank of the canal. The lions are pretty much always active when I visit, and I can tell you that they normally use all the space in their enclosure.

Okapis are almost always in their indoors, which is on-show just so you know for future visits. It's just the building next to their outdoors. The problematic animals are the duikers, who I've seen a total of once over about 25 visits to the zoo...

To be fair London does have one of the best invert houses in the country plus a lovely reptile house. Granted the bird collection isn't amazingly large but there are nevertheless some gems (both sunbird species etc.) plus a great nocturnal animal selection.

Not that simple - can't be done. Listed buildings are basically impossible to do anything to. They'd get fined into the stratosphere if they did anything to the Casson, Penguin Pool etc.
