Excellent news. Can’t recall ever seeing lion cubs off the top of my head (although I would be shocked if I haven’t at some point, when I was simply too young to remember), so this demands a visit in the coming weeks! Hopefully it isn’t long before they have names!

Looks like the white naped mangabey will have the remaining enclosures opposite the Gorrilas vacated by the Sulawesi black macaque move. One was already in use as an extension to the existing connected mangabey enclosures and the others had signage up.

A few other observations

the Von der Decken's hornbill previously in the meet the (gorillas) aviary is in one of the outside aviaries of the Blackburn pavilion as you approach its entrance.

the patagonian conure pair moved a few weeks ago to the enclosure by the display lawn. Their previous enclosure by the llamas was being refreshed and is I believe likely to house one of the existing owls.

the brown nosed coatis seem to be housed as two pairs in the exhibit at the end of Animal adventure , ie the tunnels below the footpath blocked. So one pair indoors is the small building that formerly was the house for the occupants of the small enclosure on the corner that has been empty for a whille and will presumably remain so if the coati have the indoor space.

How do they get from their original cage- the one with the modern outside area, to the other enclosures?

Well there are two indoor and two (linked) outdoor enclosures that were empty. previously the mangabey had two indoor and the large outdoor area so it looks like access to all the indoor areas can be controlled inside.

Yes, I think those enclosures were built/designed so that species could be swapped around by internal access to the different cages in each block.

Visited first thing the other day and managed to spot the lion cubs. They were in the very centre of the enclosure - you could just about see them from above, but Arya was tucked away out of sight. I also finally saw a small Indian mongoose, but only briefly as it hid as soon as it saw me.

Unsurprisingly, I had no luck with the giant salamander, despite repeatedly returning to peer into hiding spots. Kudos to whoever made the very realistic salamander sculpture outside the enclosure though - it gave me an awful shock when I turned around from having been watching some very active caecillians.

No luck with the mountain chicken frogs and the Mangshan pit viper either - does anyone have any tips for spotting them?

The ZSL has just announced HM King Charles III as its new Royal Patron. Royal support for the Society has a long history - every monarch since William IV (in 1830) has held this position, so it's very pleasing to see this tradition continued.
Interesting to note, too, that the King's father, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was President of the Zoological Society of London for eighteen consecutive years 1960 - 1977.

Probably the easiest option, considering Brexit is still messing with some animal imports. Though I'm not sure how many sengi Chester has currently.

Chester currently only have one sengi left, not sure on the gender though.

Meet The Neighbours Aviary now has the follow new birds: Madagascar crested ibis, Violaceous Turaco and White crowned robin chat.

Where abouts is this aviary, and what other species reside in it? I am a huge bird fan, so it would be great to know.

Also sorry for replying to things from so long ago: for some reason the notifications didn't show up.

Meet the Neighbours is the aviary at the entrance to Gorilla Kingdom. As you can infer by the name, it is supposed to introduce visitors to the wildlife of Central African rainforests before showing you the gorillas themselves. It is a type of enclosure that I would love to see more zoos use to theme their exhibits.

In terms of species, there are:

- Von der Decken’s Hornbill
- Violaceous Turaco
- Pink Pigeon
- White-crowned Robin-chat
- Madagascar Crested Ibis

I may be missing one, as I seem to vaguely remember seeing a small duck in there on a recent visit, but that is all I know for certain.

Oh okay, I remember going in there actually, although not much was about: only the Violet Turacos and Snowy Crowned Robin Chat. Supposedly (according to signage) there's a Hoopoe in there two.
Thanks @Kalaw
You’re quite right - the Hoopoes, which came from Bristol after it closed, are the birds that I was forgetting, although I have never seen them.

Of all the aviaries in the zoo, it is the one where I most struggle to actually see the animals, as they tend to spend most of their time indoors. That said, looking up in the trees towards the exit can usually guarantee a hornbill or pigeon and the robin-chats are always very active.
