ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2022

I’ve never been to Whipsnade, however my Parents took me to London Zoo as a toddler. I’ve always wanted to go. Would you recommend going?

I think it’s positive that Whipsnade are installing the Carousel. Yes it’s sad it’s left London, but at least it’s not been scrapped. The Carousel will appeal to a wider audience than Animatronic Dinosaurs.

personally I would highly recommend a visit! It’s probably more visitor friendly this time of year as well!

suspect that may be where the carrousel ends up? At least it’s in an area that was already aimed towards visitors

Good point - if that is the case that’ll be a bit of a bust for the red panda and otters in terms of visiting to see them in any good weather or school holiday.

I’d definitely recommend it though it’s got a few things missing there’s still lots to see (and lions until May time) and it’s a lovely area.

I would definitely recommend it. As you know my zoo interest started from Colchester, but I visited Whipsnade just over 3 years ago and I loved it. The history and theming is great, as are all of the species you can see today, I would say it is worth it even though Whipsnade might be declining. I hope to visit again this year as it is not far for me- maybe when/if Donna has her calf.

sorry it’s probably not something more exciting! Maybe it will make the area a bit smarter?

Hopefully it shouldn’t be as busy as it was at London zoo

You’re right - anything that makes the space look less like a garden centre in administration would be good!

I think it will be rammed though.

Good news just seen a picture of the carousel and it hasn't been placed in the area previously mentioned as being developed so hope for a new species going next to the red pandas afterall.

That’s good - where is it? Last time I saw it was parked in the elephant car park (guess that should be car park near the elephants).

Looks to be to the left of the lemurs, next to the old elephant building.

Thanks that sounds like a good spot for it - not too near the exhibits so not intruding on animal or animal watching space and accessible for families etc near the entrance.

Good location, though it makes the old elephant house an even more prominent eyesore! Maybe it might force the zoo to finally do something about it…or at least give it a decent paint job!

@Jedd Cullinan Unless the rules have changed, I don't think you are allowed to post other people's photos on the forum.

This is incorrect.

You are not allowed to upload other people's photos in the gallery.

However, embedding a photo from another site into a thread for discussion purposes like Jedd did, is perfectly fine - provided that you clearly identify and credit the source of the image.

In this case, the photo came from the ZSL website and I have edited Jedd's post to note that fact. It would have been better if I could identify a specific web page where the photo was on display - but from what I can tell, it was only used in one of the information carousels (yes, that's what web designers call them!) on the ZSL home page.

So the only thing Jedd didn't do correctly was crediting the source of the image - but that is easily fixed.

For future reference, @littleRedPanda if there is a problem with a post - please report it rather than posting about it in a thread, because now there are two off topic posts about this in the thread because I had to reply to correct your post.

that's good. Now that is sorted thanks to Simon. Anyway we can look forward to riding it at Whipsnade

Very busy day at Whipsnade, had to queue for half an hour before I got to the entrance. Wild boar piglets are 6 weeks old now but still suckling.
I mainly visited to see the aquarium because it was closed in 2020 and I was very impressed, loads of backup populations of very endangered species and even a panaque species that doesn’t have a latin name yet, it really showed that ZSL is a scientific organisation rather than just a place to see animals. The displays are also very educational.

Not sure if it has been mentioned in the thread already, but on the old sea lion building are these signs, I assume that means they’re going to put reptiles there then?

Not necessarily, though I can see your thinking-my initial thoughts when I saw this a few weeks ago was this is where the macaques were going to be housed!

I think it’s just to detract from how rundown and grotty the sealion building has become-you’ll notice it attempts to cover the length of the interior viewing windows and entrance.
