From May, the zoo will offer a Meet the Hippos Experience with their Common Hippos. A UK first apparently.

£84 per person mind!

You feed them at Flamingo Land as part of the Keeper For A Day Experience, and muck them out as well. Behind a barrier and see them from about a metre away.

Really enjoyable afternoon up at Whipsnade, was nice to see the sun for once! Saw all four bears, two in the new area and one in with Cinderella. Finally saw a Babirusa as well.

I think it is fair to say that work has really begun on the new Macaque area. Looks like trees have been planted in what will be the Langur enclosure as well. It looked like the Macaque area had been marked out using some yellow barriers and both areas had a digger in it.

The Wild Dogs were chilling out in there cave so I couldnt see how many were together, but its great to have the chance of offspring in the future.

Saw the Przewalski's Horse foal in the distance and the young Warty Pig has really grown since I last saw it!

Their is now 5 wild dogs, 3 joined from west midland safari park so 3 males and 2 females Whipsnade Zoo welcomes three African wild dogs in breeding bid

That article is from February, and I think there have been developments since the three boys arrived. 2 weeks ago, I stayed at Lookout Lodge and during the tour, I asked did they not have more than 3 dogs as I thought I had seen news that more had arrived and they said no without going into any details. I then asked if it was only the one group then, and they said yes, and that they only have the one male and two females. There was no mention of more off-show etc. So I'm pretty sure from that, there is now only one male and two females.

Very sad hope this can be the start of breeding.. as originally they started with 5 girls and fighting amongst them whittled it down to 2 and so I would have hoped males would have calmed it down …and forms a secure environment but now 2 of them have gone you have to wonder! Let’s hope that this trio can begin something new

Mixing animals is always difficult and extremely unpredictable. Always feel for keepers when they have to make difficult decisions.

On a separate note, I wish I had taken a photo of them but there were some deer I didn’t recognise in the passage thru Asia. It’s probably me being dumb instead of anything new!

Wasn’t the Chinese Water Deer was it, that aren’t normally signed ?

Just to butt in on the conversation - when I went over Easter, there appeared to be at least 2 animals being kept in paddocks down by the elephants, past where the train storage and maintenance area is. Both me and the other half thought they looked like dogs but there's nothing on the books that it could be. If anyone has any info that'd be grand.

Also, I'm fairly sure that there were deer when I went I didn't recognise as well. I'm no expert in them but they didn't seem like a species I've seen there before.

Could it be the two other hunting dogs? Kept separately for the time being?

May I ask how big these deer were?

Potentially - we only saw the 3 original dogs but they weren't in the main enclosure. That would explain why they were in the excess off-show paddocks I guess.

I'd say rather average - certainly bigger than the water deer, similar to PD's? But we only saw them from the train so it may just be a normal one and I'm an idiot.

We did also see some ungulates off show up the hill past the hippos, only visible from the hipoo viewing. Unfortunately too far to tell what they were.

The ungulates off show I believe are fallow deer.

Yeah definitely bigger then the water deer, but they weren’t massive. I’ve probably led everyone on a wild goose chase, should have identified them better.

Yes ungulates past the hippos are melanistic fallow deer although I haven't seen them in recent visits.

An article about Whipsnade's future lions - two-year-old females Waka and Winta from Antwerp and 18-month-old male Malik from Neuwied Zoo in Germany are the individuals selected to be transferred there in the hopes of establishing a pride for breeding. The male is due to arrive in early June according to their website: Whipsnade Zoo: Pride of lions due to arrive from Europe

Good to see the coverage. Looking forward to their arrival.
