ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2024

So Banteng AND Gaur at Whipsnade? What a time to be alive for lovers of wild bovine!

If true, where are the Banteng being exhibited?

Perhaps all the new fencing and paddock work in the zebra and waterbuck paddock is related (though that all needed a refresh anyway) but there’s nothing official that they’d even be coming.

I wonder if all that work will allow them to keep the male in that area with the banteng possibly going in the old musk ox enclosure for the time being? Just a theory IF they are getting Banteng!

Again, certainly ambitious if true. Although I hope they’re not a replacement for the Gaur!

Regarding ambition, ZSL should now go all out and get Malayan tapir. What a fantastic area of the zoo that would be!

Already happened just no one has spotted them yet, but hopefully someone will see them soon enough driving round the park.

Yes could be a few places. In the meantime I guess they might start them off in the enclosures at the entrance to passage through Asia where the Anoa spent time before moving in to monkey forest.

Hang on time out.

You mentioned the banteng being at Whipsnade before anyone actually noticed the website mentioning them, and now you're saying Whipsnade holds malayan tapir too? How do you have this information?! If true this is utterly fantastic.

Oh yes good shout. That’s always somewhere I have a look on every visit

I think they are referring to Banteng, not the tapirs…I think?

Making a huge leap there, where have I said anything about tapir, I haven't so just back up from that thought and go back to the original thought

With all due respect, you quoting a post saying how nice it would be for Whipsnade to gain tapir with a vague comment about something already being at the zoo is somewhat open to interpretation.

To clarify - do you know for certain banteng are currently at Whipsnade?

Banteng would be lovely, but nothing could ever replace the gaur in my eyes - the highlight of every Whipsnade visit without doubt. Having them as a new addition to Monkey Forest, an exhibit that I thought was wonderful on paper but just a little lacking in terms of charm due to how empty it felt, would be great. Although I still long for more macaques or an aviary, a large mammal to accompany them in a nearby enclosure would be brilliant, and with large bovines being a favourite of mine this is great news.

Regarding the gaur, I was in fact at Whipsnade admiring the gaur at the same time that the news of Berlin acquiring a bull was announced, and since then have been praying that this indicates a change of heart regarding the phase out, which I agree seemed a little needless. Hopefully there will be a time when we can see bull gaurs at Whipsnade once again!

And yes, the Berlin bull did come from 'a zoo in Spain,' that being Cabarceno.
