ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2024

Spoke to someone at the zoo today and Banteng are at Whipsnade however in quarantine for now, I did walk up to the passage through Asia entrance but looked empty so not sure they are being held there. The person I spoke to didn't know where they will be kept although they did mention maybe in monkey forest, guess we will find out soon enough.

Good news! Perhaps they will put them where the emu is.

Banteng would be a lovely addition, do hope they aren't replacing the gaur though!
Indeed it's good to see Whipsnade increasing its cattle collection but let's hope the banteng are not a replacement for the gaur.

Whipsnade now has anoa, gaur, banteng and European bison; it would be good to see American bison return to repopulate Bison Hill.

As much as it would be awesome to have American bison back, they wouldn’t have a hope of getting planning permission for a bigger house/holding area

I hope the banteng are in addition to and not in place of the gaur too.

Gaur have a body structure that is much more different from domestic cattle than banteng too. In my opinion that makes them an interesting sight in addition to their size.

I'd love to see American bison return, its a shame this species has become a bit of a rarity in the UK.

A rarity in zoos, yes, but not on farms. The Rhug Estate's very large herd is usually visible from the A5 just after the Dee bridge west of Corwen, for example.

Why not bring back the Congo buffalo?
I remember both Cape buffalo and Congo buffalo at Whipsnade. I think their large size makes Cape buffalo the more impressive exhibit but I would be very happy to see any form of African buffalo at Whipsnade again.

I’m confused
So Luna giraffe had another baby last weekend? As they had the female born in June to Ijuma and I didn’t think the other mum would have a baby so soon given she got a 20month old male calf in Wilfred!

There was a sign saying it was born recently. The keeper said it was a male and born last week, don't know the names of the giraffes.
