Zürich Zoo Zurich Zoo News

I'm agree on the last sentence Antonmuster.
And I think that the zebu part will be the future gorilla/hippo exhibit.

The area that is designated for "gorillas" in the masterplan is another ~1.5 hectares of undeveloped zoo land located above the "zebu" area and below the walkway to Masoala. On the map the "zebu" area appears larger than the elephant outdoors. It is hard to imagine that this will indeed 'only' be used for cattle. Perhaps it is not yet clear how the zoo wants to use this land (black rhino, an additional aviary, carnivores, primates, ...?) which may depend on available funding and projected costs of the "Lewa" project. Or they are planning a "low level" development to keep this land as a strategic reserve for future developments beyond the 2030 masterplan (hippo, shoebill, crocodile, a vivarium on an African theme, a wetlands area, a desert area, ...?).

In any case, there is ample room for speculation. Perhaps someone knows more.

Well at least hyena and mongoose will be added as well according to the new guidebook, which will probably be in the lower left corner.

I'm very sorry for this late reply but I was told that the Zebu area is the future "African rainforest". In the masterplan on the new website it looks like the gorillas and orangutans will move together in a new house, what I don't understand, because there is space in the area of the actual ape house that could be used by the orangs.

that's interesting to hear, because above the zebu area there is yet more land - roughly the size of the elephant park - which according to the master plan is also reserved for the apes / african jungle (see attachment). Incidently, these two areas combined equal ~2.5 hectares - ample space for an "african jungle" project (Pongoland is ~2.5 hectares, the Masoala hall is ~1 hectare, Gondwanaland is ~1.5 hectares). Below the savanna there is yet another ~5 hectares of forest clearing - however this land does not currently seem to be zoo property.
I believe the area of the present ape house, according to the master plan on the website, is designated to become part of the future "coastal area".

Thank you very much for this picture. It seems like I understood it wrong and I'm sure that Zurich can build an great gorilla exhibit. And as I see, the orangutans should stay at the area they are now.
And I would prefer to see an Arican themed costal area with african penguins and fur seals in the new zoo part.

Hello, but that animal will be in the future Asian steppe habitat?

The Asian Steppe will be where at the moment allready is the Indian Steppe, with blackbucks, elds deer and nilgai and the former monkey house, at the moment a playground, the Oryx and Zebra paddocks and the Camel paddock. As I have read in some plans they plan with Nilgai, Blackbuck and an deer species and you will definitley can look in from the lion house.

Purely out of interest, and since I haven't seen or read a lot about them elsewhere, are the 2 species of Cheirogaleidae (Goodmann's mouse lemur and Geoffroy's dwarf lemur) still occasionally spotted in the Masoala-halle?
I assume the odds of seeing either species, and then certainly the latter, must be slim to none, but I assume people visiting often might have a chance, and certainly zookeepers must know where to find them. Are there any places where it is easier to spot them than others?

I've visited the Zoo for almost 5 years every two weeks, but I never spotted any mouse lemur, so you really need to have a lot of luck. But there are some feeding stations which the animals use regurally, I'll try to find out if the dwarf lemur is still alive and how many mouse lemurs they have.

Thanks for the response, arafan! Very interesting to grasp quite how rare a sight they are. I hope you're able to spot them, or learn more about them soon!
