Presumably next summer or there about

Ohhhhh interesting I'm more use to summer births still having a monumental birth like this early on is great for Chester like Gabe was this year, it signifies a good breeding year to come.

Difference is that the exhibit at CWP is a lot smaller and a *lot* less well-vegetated than the exhibit in question at Chester; not to mention the fact that the Malaysian Binturong (the subspecies at CWP) is more than twice the size of Palawan Binturong :p
Umm... I wasn't expecting them to be that much smaller, it'll be interesting to see by how much! Agreed, there is less low-level vegetation at CWP, but the enclosure isn't much smaller. The old tiger enclosure is only ~1,275m², maybe someone knows what the one at Cotswold is? About 900m² maybe?

Not been fortunate enough to see Palawan in person, but I am given to understand from those who have that they are closer in size to Common Palm Civet - although somewhat more heavily-set - than they are to nominate Binturong.

As you say, it will be interesting to see them in person to gauge the difference.

The animal unit at my university (I study animal management) has a common palm civet...thinking of how big non-subspecific and Malayan binturongs are compared to him it baffles me to think there can be a binturong that size! I shall be interested to see them :)

Aren't the binturong at Cotswold in the old Lar Gibbon cage? I find it hard to believe that's 3/4 of the size of the old Chester tiger enclosure! more like 1/4 at the most?
Having seen Palawan Binturong, I wouldn't say they are half the size of the others I've seen, smaller yes, but not that small

So the binturong have already arrived, are they on show and what collection have they arrived from?

They are indeed already there. They are apparently in the old tiger/sun bear enclosure, and came from Belfast.

The binturong arrived in the spring, I can't remember from where but they were only on loan at their previous collection and their owner transferred them to Chester.

The pair were originally imported from Avilon Wildlife Conservation Foundation in the Philippines to the Rare Species Conservation Centre. In 2011 they were sent to Belfast, where they lived until their move to Chester.

Thanks for that info Jake I can just imagine the little quote on the species sign (The one every enclosure in the zoo has with the drawings) being: their natural sent is buttered popcorn

Are we looking at next summer for the opening of the next part of islands? I am disappointed that the zoo hasn't continued to give updates about the ongoing development of islands on the mini site that they set up. it started off with regular updates and has now completely died off...

Yes Islands is expected to finish expansion for phase 2 next summer (hopefully) and I completely agree but there is a problem that some news stories won't show up, it always happens that I just seen up to the Orang move (though I have read the rest)

It is expected to be open in the summer - tapir house and enclosure, walk through aviary and bear/binturong enclosure.

The zoo is often not very forthcoming with news.

On my last visit on6th November work was progressing very quickly on the tapir exhibit. The work can be seen from the entrance to Monsoon forest and from the bridge.
