I've never seen much there. There used to be a pond with a sign saying deep water, everytime I looked it was bone dry.

That is very nice to know. I have never been to the nature reserve. Is it worth visiting?

It's free, so there's nothing to lose by going to see it (which I suppose in itself makes it 'worth visiting' if you're at the zoo), although I would agree with bongorob that one doesn't tend to see a great deal there.

Sounds like the Twycross one! Which in my experience is a waste of space

Once it has expanded and also the plants and habitats have developed and matured, it should be a good little nature reserve

Looking at some instagram photos it looks as if the Victoria Crowned pigeon are nesting again with an egg in Tropical realm, I hope this year it may hatch after the events of last year where people where absolute idiots!

I knew people would do *stupid* things, but willful destruction of the thing you just paid quite a lot of money to see!? It doesn't make sense on any level! I didn't realise any zoo would have to deal with that kind of thing.

Believe it!
If you do a Media search for the keyword 'pigeon' in the 'Chester Zoo' category you will find photos of one of the pair on the nest and of the sign beside it. They were posted by Gigit last September.

Just the other week while at Hamerton, while I was leaving I heard keepers saying that some kids were throwing small stones at the lemurs near the exit. I think the family involved were just ahead of me in the car park, as I could hear them ranting and cursing the staff.

I must admit after my last few visits it doesn't surprise me to hear of this sort of behaviour at Chester, as I have witnessed staff leaving the tropical realm and other indoor exhibits when it gets a little crowded and loud only to stand outside the building.
I witnessed some children trying to grab the birds in the tropical realm and informed a member of staff standing outside the building only to be greeted with a smile and then they walked away.
More experienced staff are required for these area's I would go as far as saying even first aider's should be inside the buildings but the staff should be more visible at all times.

I don't see many bird keepers now, but I'd say the people you spoke to were interns and not keepers. All the keepers I know would take a report of animal harrassment very seriously.

Staff take these matter seriously, so I don't know who you spoke to.

I have seen staff running to realm of the red ape, to confront a man who had taken (smuggled) a African grey parrot into the zoo to show the orangs. (I know they were running to do that as I stopped them to inform them he had the bird, and they told me they were already going to talk to him).

More likely is the people he spoke with were zoo volunteers, who also happen to wear the same uniform as zoo staff proper . From experience 99% of which are completely useless ,and a waste of time them being in the zoo.
