Yeah, it's fair enough that they believe it, it's just the protesters that annoy me, and the fact that they won't see any of the good that zoos can do.

I think its unfair to say that but yes they get on my nerves as well. Very few of them actually know anything much about zoos and those that do tend to ignore their own knowledge.

As for manatees, they are listed on IUCN as vulnerable.
 
i believe the focus was on certain locations rather then the animal exhibits, so technically they could put any old speciees in, as long as they represented a certain location and so manatees fit perfectly (and besides which i really really want to see one:D )

Me to! I hope they do get them as i think they would be a real draw for the public (and me!). I wonder where they would get them from? Haven't beauval got a good breeding record, i think that they are west indians but i am not sure whether they are florida manatees or caribbean manatees.

i din't realise there wasn't a difference between the two (florida and west indes), i tyhink quite a few zoos in north america have manatee's (quite a few are rescued) my guess is that they will be imported from their...i wonder if they will be rescues?

I thought the same thing, but I think cat-man is on about the closest Florida manatees. Don't most zoos in Europe have Indians?

Correct the ones in Europe are West Indian but still its alot closer to go to see a Manatee and certainly alot cheaper.

Re Conservation Park planning application.
I just looked again and it is working at the moment.

Search planning applications - South Gloucestershire Council

scroll down to the bottom and click on the yellow box 'do it now'

scroll down to find the enter reference numver box and type PT08/2900/F in the box.

You should then be able to download all the pdf files relating to the development. I've not counted them but there are a lot!

Florida and Caribbean (Antillean) Manatees are both subspecies of the West Indian Manatee. All the manatees exhibited in the US are of the Florida subspecies, except for those at the Dallas World Aquarium (they have the Caribbean). The USFWS have a tight grip around the Florida Manatees, there are not captive breeding programs available and most captive manatees are part of the rehabiliatation program. The Caribbean Manatees are not found in the continental US and are the manatee of choice for most captive facilites outside the US, especially if they want to breed them.

In the plans for the China mountain area of the park, there's a picture of an enclosure labled Golden monkeys!
Doubt that'll happen lol

This is what i said - i think they are west indians but i am not sure if they are florida manatees or caribbean manatees - but i don't think that i made it clear enough, sorry for the confusion.

Interesting. I wonder if they will attempt to source florida manatees as these are the ones living in the area the exhibit is trying to replicate. Although, they will probably just get caribbeans and refer to them as west indians so that no one realizes they don't actually live there.
 
Florida Manatees are only found in the United States and the USFWS heavily regulates the captive program for this subspecies, no one will be able to obtain this subspecies outside the US.

The subspecies of manatee in Costa Rica are Caribbean manatees (T.m. manatus), so this subspecies will work well for Bristol's theming. Both the Florida (T.m. latirostris) and the Caribbean (T.m. manatus) manatee subspecies belong to the same West Indian Manatee species (Trichechus manatus).

Another geography fact the islands in the Caribbean Sea are collectively known as the West Indes or Antillean Islands.
 
Certainly makes for interesting reading.

Interesting they have submitted designs for Okapi Housing! Will they be allowed to move there current pair? Or will they be applying to house more consider there technically the same collection?
